The Causes and Cures for Constipation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: I feel that I have more than my share of constipation, for I never
hear anyone else complain. I must be doing something wrong. Can you offer me
some suggestions about the causes and, hopefully, the cures for my problem. I
could use a little help.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: Constipation occurs when the body's solid wastes move through the
colon too slowly.
Waste products are pushed towards the rectum by muscular contractions
called peristaltic waves. As the movement occurs, excess water is being drawn
out through the walls of the colon, so that by the time the waste reaches the
rectum, much of the water has been removed. This makes the waste more solid,
and of course, a bit harder.
The problem of constipation arises when the contractions are sluggish.
Since water is constantly being drawn out, the fecal mass becomes dry and hard
if it has passed through the colon at too slow a speed.
Obviously, if the waste passes through too quickly, not enough water
would be removed, and the result would be diarrhea. You cannot control the
muscular contractions in the digestive system the way you control other
muscles in your body. What you can do is to improve your diet, eating foods
that contain plenty of dietary fiber, such as whole grain breads and cereals
and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Also, try to eat on a regular schedule,
chewing your food thoroughly. Make sure to drink plenty of liquids,
especially water, milk and juices.
When you feel the urge for a bowel movement, do so promptly. When you
put it off till later, you may have to strain. Too much straining can cause
irritation and may even lead to hemorrhoids.
Daily exercise can also help keep your body regular, because it keeps
your whole body in tune and the digestive system running properly. Even if
you take only a bit of my advice, some of the time, you should find that your
problem isn't quite as bad as it once was.
