A Resource About Talking with Your Doctor
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even a superficial reading of my mail can convince you that, of all the
problems in the medical system today, communication between doctors and
patients ranks right up there as a priority consideration. Admittedly, the
process of examination, testing and treatment is a costly one, and everyone is
entitled to their money's worth, but understanding the problem can do as much
to relieve the symptoms, anxiety and fear, as medications can. The science of
medicine (I prefer to think of it as an Art) is enormously complicated, and
there is not always a clear, black or white explanation of the workings of
disease, or the reasons some medications work for some people, while they fail
in others. There are times when not only the patient is puzzled, but the
physician is as well. That's why, from my point of view, direct, personal and
caring communication may well be the best medicine. But it may be that you
must take the first step, and be wise in the ways of obtaining the knowledge
you need from your doctor. And I have found just the booklet you need to
help. Its called "Talking with Your Doctor" and is available from the
American Cancer Society. Check your telephone directory for the number and
address of your local chapter, and request your free copy from them. If you
have any problems, you may call the new hotline number at the National Office,
1-800-ACS-2345 with your request. This important and informative brochure
offers you clearly written advice on how to share information with your doctor
and how to ask those all important questions. I hope you will make the effort
to obtain your copy.
