  18. QUESTION:  The results of my recent PAP smear were not all that either my
  19. physician or I could have wished for.  Now he is proposing a colposcopy
  20. examination, but I thought that was for rectal cancer.  Can you please explain
  21. what he is suggesting, what he hopes to accomplish and if you think it is a
  22. good idea?

  26. ANSWER:  You have got your scopes just a bit confused, but that's
  27. understandable.  It is a colonoscope that is used for rectal and colon
  28. examinations.  The colposcope (from the Greek word kolpos--referring to the
  29. vagina) is very much like a binocular microscope with special ability to light
  30. the vagina and particularly the cervix at the end of the vagina.  The tissue
  31. that forms the covering of the cervix may be clearly seen, and it was this
  32. tissue covering that gave rise to the cells seen on your pap smear that are
  33. causing the anxiety.  With this instrument, your physician can identify any
  34. abnormal patches of tissue, take small pieces for examination (biopsy), and
  35. determine the presence of any precancerous growth or an actual cancer.  Since
  36. it is performed in the office, it is much cheaper than a hospital stay, and
  37. the side effects are minimal.  Your physician is attempting to make an
  38. accurate diagnosis in a manner that is least disturbing to you, to plan his
  39. therapy.  I think it is a fine idea.
