  19. QUESTION:  I'm to have a new test called MRI.  As with anything medical, and
  20. unknown, I have become quite worried about this whole deal.  Is there
  21. anything I can do to prepare myself for the test?

  25. ANSWER:  Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to check for possible
  26. disorders of the brain or spinal cord, or for problems with the lower back,
  27. heart, chest, pelvis, and other areas.  It places you in a strong magnetic
  28. field, where a series of radio signals will be beamed at the part of your body
  29. being studied.  This will stimulate certain atoms in your own tissue to
  30. produce radio signals of their own.  The resulting signals are translated by
  31. computer into pictures of that body part.
  32.      Because MRI involves magnets, you will need to remove all jewelry and
  33. metallic objects, and the test is not for people with pacemakers, surgical
  34. clips, or other metal objects in their bodies.
  35.      During the test, you will be lying on a table that will slide you inside
  36. a large metal cylinder.  Although you will be able to talk through a
  37. communications system, tell your doctor if you have ever had claustrophobia or
  38. anxiety from being a small enclosure.
  39.      Finally, as with x-rays or photos, you need to relax and remain still
  40. during the test.  You won't feel anything, but you'll hear a soft tapping from
  41. the radio signals.  Afterwards, unless your doctor gives you other
  42. instructions, you'll be able to resume normal activities immediately.  It
  43. would seem that your biggest task at present is to remain calm awaiting a
  44. test that will cause no physical pain and will assist your physician in
  45. caring for you.
