Message from the Daughter of Marchese Guglielmo Marconi The Founder of Wireless
"Over the last three years, centenary celebrations of the work of my father have taken place in many countries throughout the world. In 1995 the Italian Government held exhibitions in Italy covering the initial experiments he started at his home, the Villa Griffone in Bologna in 1895. 1996 saw the commemoration of the establishment in England of the first patent for wireless telegraphy in 1896. Special stamps were issued by the Royal Mail to celebrate this event. In 1997 we celebrate the establishment of The Wireless Telegraph and Signal Company in 1897. Later renamed Marconi's Wireless and Telegraph Company. Chelmsford will commemorate | this event with various functions as it is also
the sixtieth anniversary of my father's death and the seventy-fifth anniversary
of the first wireless broadcast from Chelmsford.
In all of these events I have been privileged to unveil plaques or
attend commemoration lunches and other celebrations in countries where the work
of my father has been well and truly recognised.
1998 will be the centenary of the world's first wireless factory being
established by my father in Chelmsford, the county town of Essex.
From Rome, where I live with my son Prince Guglielmo, I send greetings
to all those people in the Group of Marconi companies and also to people who
pioneer in the field of electronics to bring communication in its most modern
form to the outposts of the world.
Today's equipment is a far cry from the very basic items invented by my
father which led to the many facets of communication as we know it today with
satellites, radar, broadcasting, telephone, fax and computers. Because of this I
feel proud to be the daughter of Guglielmo Marconi." Princess Elettra Giovanelli Marconi
