Overview

The Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating system builds on the strengths of Windows NT technology, combining standards-based directory, Web, application, communications, file, and print services with high reliability, efficient management, and support for the latest advances in networking hardware. All of this provides a superior foundation for integrating your business with the Internet.

To bring these benefits to customers who have chosen the Novell NetWare operating system and to help them migrate to Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft developed Microsoft Services for NetWare v.5 (SFNW5). SFNW5 provides customers with a complete set of new interoperability services and tools for integrating the Windows 2000 Server product family and Windows NT Server 4.0 into their existing NetWare environments.

The new interoperability technologies of Services for NetWare include the following:

Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services.
File Migration Utility
File and Print Services for NetWare v.5.

Services for NetWare also includes the following interoperability technologies available in previous versions:

File and Print Services for NetWare v.4.
Directory Service Manager for NetWare.

Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services

Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) enables customers to synchronize a wide variety of data stored in the Active DirectoryTM service with Novell Directory Service (NDS) and NetWare 3.x binderies.

MSDSS is a highly flexible service that helps Novell customers reduce network management and simplify the adoption of Windows 2000 Server in a NetWare environment. MSDSS supports two-way synchronization with NDS and one-way synchronization with NetWare 3.x binderies to provide a complete directory interoperability solution. MSDSS also supports password synchronization and provides a directory migration service.

MSDSS allows NetWare customers to deploy Active Directory in Windows 2000 Server without having to replace existing directories or bear the cost of managing two separate directories. As a result, customers have the flexibility to consolidate directory management where multiple directories are required, manage accounts from either directory, and use directory-enabled applications, devices, and services based on the Windows 2000 Active Directory service.

MSDSS supports all major NetWare platforms and most Novell directories and binderies, and it includes support for IPX/SPX and TCP/IP network protocols.

File Migration Utility

File Migration Utility (FMU) enables customers to move large amounts of file data from all versions of NetWare to Windows 2000, while preserving directory structures and security permissions.

Integrated with MSDSS, FMU preserves file-access control information so that security permissions are not lost during the migration. Moreover, users can maintain access to their files during the migration process, providing a seamless and transparent migration experience. FMU can also be used to perform gradual or direct migrations through a wizard-based migration-management interface.

FMU supports all major NetWare file systems and platforms and includes support for IPX/SPX and TCP/IP network protocols.

File and Print Services for Netware Version 5.0

File and Print Services for NetWare 5 (FPNW5) is an add-on product that allows customers using NetWare 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x (in bindery emulation mode) to enhance their NetWare-based network with Windows 2000-based servers that look like a NetWare server to NetWare clients, users, and administrators. Many customers are interested in this kind of coexistence, since Windows 2000 Server is a multipurpose server operating system that offers excellent file and print, application, communication, directory, terminal, and Internet/intranet services.

FPNW5 emulates NetWare servers, which eases the transition from NetWare to Windows 2000 by not interfering with the NetWare network, by maintaining a single logon for the clients, requiring no client configuration changes, and allowing customers to benefit from the strengths of Windows 2000 Server while maintaining their current investment and infrastructure.

File and Print Services for Netware Version 4.0

File and Print Services for NetWare v.4 (FPNW4) performs the exact same functions as FPNW5, but for Windows NT Server 4.0 instead of Windows 2000.

Directory Service Manager for Netware

Directory Service Manager for NetWare (DSMN) can be used specifically to manage NetWare 2.x and 3.x binderies with Windows NT Server 4.0 Directory Service. DSMN copies the NetWare user accounts to the Windows NT Server 4.0 Directory Service and then propagates any changes back to the NetWare server.

NetWare 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x customers who are managing their networks via the NetWare bindery have a huge management burden because they have to manage each server and its users separately from the rest of their servers. With Windows NT Server 4.0 and DSMN, these NetWare customers can centrally manage their mixed Windows NT- and NetWare-based environments using Windows NT Server 4.0 Directory Services. All this is done without the need to install any software on the NetWare servers.

Conclusion

Microsoft Windows Services for Netware v.5 lets customers integrate the Windows 2000 Server platform into a variety of existing NetWare environments. In conjunction with the interoperability services included with Windows 2000 Server, Services for NetWare provides interoperability services and tools that help NetWare customers more easily coexist with, or migrate to, the Windows 2000 Server platform.
