Extending Your Business with Advanced Web and Application Services

Introduction

The Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating system provides the services you need to deliver content and applications to your employees, customers, business partnersand the worldthrough the Web. Building on the strength of the Web and application services in the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system, Windows 2000 delivers the latest advances in Web server, scripting, component services, and data access and XML technologies. The combination is also tightly integrated with the Active DirectoryTM service to provide unprecedented manageability, extranet and electronic commerce capabilities.

Because the Web and application services in Windows 2000 are integrated at the operating system level, applications can take advantage of the reliability, scalability and security that only Windows 2000 can provide. Whether you are targeting employees, customers or business partners, Windows 2000 is the best way to get ahead in Digital Business.

Web Services: Windows 2000 erases the lines between your network and the Internet, letting your employees immediately take advantage of new ways to share information. Internet Information Services 5.0 (IIS), the Windows 2000 integrated Web server includes support for the latest internet standards like WWW Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) compression, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) session restart, and digest authentication. It also delivers new levels of Web server scalability and reliability. It can even automatically restart itself if a bad Web application does cause a crash. IIS 5.0 includes an enhanced version of the high performance, industry proven server-scripting environment, Active Server Pages (ASP).
Application Services: Windows 2000 integrates the industry-leading Web server and component development model: IIS 5.0, and COM+ Component Services. The combination of IIS 5.0 and COM+ Services delivers the important infrastructure that application developers need to build scalable distributed applications quickly and easily: An object based programming model, HTTP processing (IIS 5.0), an industry proven server-scripting environment (ASP), object pooling, database access, high performance Extensible Markup Language (XML) processing, transaction management, messaging and routing, and state management. Thus, Windows 2000 delivers the full range of services you need to build really powerful Web applications.
Open software and data integration: Windows 2000 Server supports a full range of industry standards to allow you to build applications that integrate with databases, mail servers, (XML, and other existing systems. XML is particularly important, because just as HTML lets developers describe the format of a Web document, XML lets them describe complex data structures. Developers can share this information across a variety of applications, clients, and servers. Windows 2000 includes a high performance, scalable XML processor.
High performance and reliability: You can meet the higher performance and workload requirements typical to Web-enabled applications with applications that can scale to meet even the most demanding load. In addition, Windows 2000 Web Services take advantage of the increased reliability of the Windows 2000 operating system, and enhancements to the core Web Services to ensure that your Web sites and Web applications stay up and running. Windows 2000 Advanced Server integrates Microsoft Clustering Services (MSCS) to provide 2-node application and data failover support.
Scalability: You can grow your web site capacity as your business grows by scaling up or scaling out. Scale up by adding processors and memory or purchasing larger servers. With great symmetric multi-processor (SMP) support, Windows 2000 Server takes full advantage of the additional computing resources. Scale out using Network Load Balancing (NLB) to build Web farms. With integrated Network Load Balancing, Windows 2000 Advanced Server can scale out to support the busiest sites on the Internet.
Integrated security: An expanded set of security features allows you to protect your most sensitive applications and data. Windows 2000 Web Services provides 128-bit security and takes advantage of the latest security standards such as Digest Authentication, Kerberos v5 authentication and Fortezza. Because Windows 2000 includes Active Directory, application developers can take advantage of object naming and location services, user authentication services, single sign-on, and centralized configuration and policy management.
Simplified management: A host of new features make it easier than ever to manage your Web servers. For example, the improved ease of local and remote management in Windows 2000 helps reduce the amount of time spend managing the system. Windows 2000 Web Services provide a number of mechanisms that allow administrators to manage remote systems. Improved management features make it easier to run multiple sites from a single server.
Hardware Support: Windows 2000 lets you take advantage of the latest hardware like multi-processor systems and commerce accelerators to make your site even faster and more secure.
