Eating Tips
When buying melon, consider the shape, size, and color of the fruit. A good canteloupe should have a cream-colored netting on the skin with a golden yellow background. A honeydew should be smooth and cream colored. Choose a watermelon that is deep green with light stripes.

Hold the melon and give it a good squeeze, but not too hard. If it's too soft to the touch, it is past its peak. A melon should give without losing firmness.

Now smell it. It should smell sweet, not musty. Hold it next to your ear and shake it. If you hear any rattling, you have a lemon. You can buy most melons throughout the year, but the best watermelon crop harvests are in spring and summer.
