Microsoft and new developer Friendly Software have come together to produce a golf game substantially different from MS Golf 3.0, and the results are impressive indeed. The sequel to the popular motocross racing game includes support for all major 3D graphics accelerators in addition to enhanced visuals and special effects. This demo, using 70 percent complete pre-alpha software, lets you try a couple tracks from the full version and even lets you challenge a friend in split-screen mode.

Note: In our testing this game ran fine on one machine with a 3DFX card, but failed to run on another due to some mysterious conflict. Nontheless we thought we would include it.

Transported to the future, players drive state-of-the-art carbon fibre tanks where quick shooting and thinking are necessary in ensure survival for themselves and the entire world. The XB-80 tank is composed of a high-tech carbon which allows for maximum agility, speed, and navigation. Players are obligated to find other technologies that can be added to the tanks. The demo provides a seek and destroy Island Storm scenario. Support is provided for Direct3D graphics cards.

Cyberstorm 2: Corporate Wars is the sequel to Mission Force: Cyberstorm and offers both turn-based and real-time gameplay. The demo provides both a training mission in which many features of the gameplay are explained, such as mini-map navigation and single-unit selection and movement, and a standard mission in which any enemies found on your outer perimeter patrol must be investigated and deterred. Grim Fandango combines Mexican folklore with film noir to tell an original and bizarre story set in the Land of the Dead. The game's main character is Manny Calavera, a long-dead working-class stiff stuck with the task of welcoming newcomers to their new non-existence and setting them on five-year journeys across the Land of the Dead. Manny wants to escape this situation and commits a desperate act that plunges him into the centre of a plot full of double-crossing schemers, menacing bad guys, and femmes fatale. The game's 3D artwork is based on Mexican folklore and has also been inspired by "The Nightmare Before Christmas". The player drives the main character and interacts directly with the environment, rather than hunting for hot spots. A boldly stylistic and challenging direction for LucasArts, Grim Fandango should give the adventure genre some much needed rejuvenation.

Take MicroProse's sequel to 1942: Pacific Air War for a test flight. The demo of this World War II combat sim features two sample missions. In one, you fly a P-51D Mustang and must escort and protect a B-17. The second demo mission puts you in a Focke-Wulf Fw190A-8, and you and your wingmen must shoot down a group of B-17s and their P-15 escorts.

Extreme Tactics offers a real-time war simulation in which players design and control their own vehicles and engage in a futuristic ground war. Set on the distant planet Calibria, a global war between the Bloodfox Clan and the Hammerhawk Clan has broken out over control of the planet's scarce natural resources. WarGames is set 20 years after the film's main character, David Lightman, hacked his way accidentally into the military computer that controlled America's nuclear arsenal and nearly triggered a war. David now works for NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defence centre, creating war simulations for the computer he hacked so many years ago. David tests his simulations by posting them on Protovision's web site, a game company fronting for top-secret NORAD operations. The player assumes the role of a Web-surfing gamer who decides to check out these latest games from Protovision and soon finds himself drawn into a competition of warfare and brainpower where the world's safety is truly at stake. The demo supports 3Dfx acceleration and multiplayer gameplay.
