Utilities

Note: PC User provides these programs on an as is basis, and they should be used with extreme care. While they have all worked fine in testing, we cannot promise that they will work as expected on all systems. In rare cases they may even cause some damage.

Netpad is a handy accessory to have on your screen as you browse the Web. It incorporates a browser, and as you access sites, you can select any URL or information that you want to keep, and drag it across to Netpad's "idea" screen. You can link these idea notes to other notes in any configuration you wish. The first line in each note is used to create a title, which appears in a separate screen.

This program is very useful as well as being great fun. It turns your computer into a corkboard. You can switch to it whenever you want to check on your To Do items, messages, or when you leave your computer. It also runs as a screensaver. Although the program is free, you're asked to register after 10 days and there are lots of new themes on the Web site for you to install and play with.

This handy program reports the current state of your hard drives. You'll see the total megs and gigs, amount of space used and free, plus the useable swap space; and as it browses through your hard drives, Diskstate displays a pie chart of the usage results. You can also use the program to eliminate space wasted after a program crashes or to delete temporary files, track down duplicate files and more.

If you're using Outlook, take a look at this shareware add-on. Its biggest benefit is that you can see much of your Outlook information in a single screen, which makes the program less overwhelming when your Task list is hundreds of items long. Active View gives you easy and fast access to all your information in Outlook: you can manage your Contacts, Tasks and Calendar. Active View also lets you create an information database of freeform notes, which are attached to your individual contacts.

How many times have you typed your name, e-mail address and other information? Dropit Pro is a nifty little utility primarily for filling out Web forms, but you can use it offline as well. Sure you could type your data once and then copy and paste, but if you have to do that, it's faster to retype the information. With Dropit Pro, you just drag-and-drop. The information can consist of a single line or many lines. You can even save the information in list boxes to the clipboard or to Notepad.

FAT32

From: Microsoft

Need more space on your drive? Microsoft Windows 98 has an enhanced file system called FAT32. It's more efficient than the original FAT file system in Windows 95 because the minimum space needed to store a file (ie, the `cluster size') has been reduced to 4Kb from 32Kb in most Windows 95-based PCs. This means those using the original Windows 95 can expect as much as 28 percent more hard drive space using FAT32.

But don't take Microsoft's word for it. With their free FAT32 utility, you can see just how much space you could gain by using Windows 98 and converting to the enhanced FAT32 file system.

Rating: star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)

From our experience, one of the most reliable virus scanners around. Thunderbyte will detect all known viruses, plus guard against new and unknown viruses. For full protection and virus cleaning capabilities you will need to register, but the shareware version will alert you to any virus you may have and offer several options to getting rid of it.

PaintShop Pro 5
Registered price: $110

Rating: star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)

PaintShop Pro has always been our favourite graphic file viewer and converter, but in this latest version, this shareware program is now a comprehensive graphics package. As well as providing a Browse utility for managing graphics files, it lets you create and save graphics in the GIF and JPG formats common on the Web. It also provides image manipulation tools that'll let you grab an image and edit it to your heart's content.

WinZip (32-bit)

Registered price: $45
Rating: star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)star.gif (195 bytes)

WinZip is the de facto standard in handling Windows archiving, and if effective archive management is important to you, you need this program. In this latest version, you can choose between the standard interface and the compression wizard, for those who are new to handling archiving.

Windows NT 4.0
PowerToys for NT

Many of the Windows 95 PowerToys will play with NT4, as Link Harris explains.

Seven of the more serious Microsoft PowerToys, unofficial freebies originally intended for Windows 95, have been enhanced for spiffing up NT4. Here is the line-up.

tweakuis.gif (1343 bytes)Tweak UI v1.1 (Tweakui.inf). If it bugs you having to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and enter a password every time you start NT4, head straight for the Network tab. Note that this won't work properly with a <null> password (one containing no characters). Clicking Tips on the Mouse tab opens an NT4 Help file for all the tabs, and it's worth spending some time studying how each can tweak your user interface (UI). The Mouse tab also incorporates the features of XMouse, a separate PowerToy for Windows 95. To find the icon that starts Tweak UI, click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

deskmens.gif (1425 bytes)Desktop Menu (Deskmenu.inf). Have you ever been frustrated by needing to access an icon on your desktop only to find it's smothered by a stack of open windows? If so, you'll adore this menu alternative, which you pop up by clicking its icon next to the clock on your Taskbar. Desktop Menu is installed into the Startup group in the top part of the Programs section of the Start menu, which ensures the icon appears each time you reboot.

sendtoxs.gif (1474 bytes)Send To Extensions v1.4 (Sendtox.inf). This PowerToy should placate anyone who feels ripped off by the meagre choices on the native File, Send To menu. New options include opening an e-mail message with the selected file attached. To configure the options, double-click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then on the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Send To Extensions PowerToy, and click Add/Remove. The only online documentation is at the beginning of the file \winnt\System32\ShellExt\Sendtox.inf.

findxs.gif (1532 bytes)Find Extensions v1.2 (Findx.inf). Extending the reach of your Find menu is now only limited by your imagination -- and your software. As with Send To Extensions, this PowerToy is configured from Add/Remove Programs. After selecting PowerToy-Find . . . Extensions, and clicking Add/Remove, click Help for documentation and tips, or Open to customise the Find menu.

heres.gif (1632 bytes)Command Prompt Here v1.1 (Doshere.inf). Opens a Command Prompt window with the selected folder as default. Similarly, Explore From Here (Explore.inf) opens Windows NT Explorer with the selected folder as the root folder -- a nifty feature for networks. In addition to appearing on the File menu, both features are included on the context menu when you right-click on either a folder in a window or the open folder at the top-left corner.

targets.gif (1284 bytes)Shortcut Target Menu v1.2 (Target.inf). Adds a link to the context menu of a shortcut's target program, giving you quick access to the target's Properties screen.

Installing PowerToys
You can pick up the PowerToys at http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/powertoys.htm

Install each one by right-clicking the information (*.inf) file shown above following the name of the PowerToy. The readme.txt file that accompanies the installation files lists more features for each PowerToy. However, ignore the instructions it gives to use install.inf, which tries to install all of the PowerToys -- even those that clobber NT4.
