![]() ![]() ![]() Having problems? Here are some common set-up issues and their solutions Following are questions and problems that have turned up when people ran Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview's Active Setup Wizard, along with the solutions. (Note: Peer discussions available via newsgroups. Microsoft has also created public newsgroups for peer-to-peer support and discussion regarding the Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 4.0. No account name or password is required.) The download process stops, indicating that the set-up attempt has failed. This error is most likely caused by a break in your Internet connection that occured before the Active Setup Wizard could finish downloading Internet Explorer 4.0 to your computer. Traffic on the Internet or on the connection provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can affect the rate at which you are able to download the product. Therefore, Microsoft recommends that users begin by downloading the Standard version of Internet Explorer 4.0, which is the smallest package available. Once this is complete, you can revisit the Internet Explorer Web site and run the Active Setup Wizard again to download additional Suite Components. When you do so, the Wizard will tell you which components you have not yet installed on your machine. After choosing a download location, I get this error: "Network is busy. Try again?" If the server that you are trying to connect to is busy, the Active Setup Wizard will try again to connect to the remote server. If this fails on the first few tries, the Wizard will ask if you wish to continue trying. You can then try connecting to a different download location, or you can disconnect and try to run the Wizard again at a time when there's less traffic. Smart Recovery: If your Internet connection should fail in the middle of the download process, the Active Setup Wizard will recognize where the installation halted and recover the installation where it left off. To continue downloading, all you need to do is connect to the Internet again and run the Wizard (either from your local drive or from the Internet Explorer 4.0 download site). The Active Setup Wizard first says it is downloading the site list but then fails and says Internet Explorer 4.0 is not set up.
This could result from one of the following:
The Active Setup Wizard installs some items, but others have a red "X" next to them. What happened? Internet Explorer 4.0 installs in components. If the red "X" appears in any of the installation groups—such as communications or multimedia—that means the corresponding components were not installed, even though the basic browser functionality was. You can rerun the Active Setup Wizard to install the missing components. Select Upgrade Only Newer Components to install only those items that failed previously. Setup inserts a red "X" next to all the items and says the installation failed. If the main Internet Explorer 4.0 components fail to install, the Active Setup Wizard will not install any of the remaining groupings. Possible causes: Low disk space. Free up some more disk space, and try the Active Setup Wizard again. A file may still be in use. Close all open applications, and rerun the Wizard. Invalid system configuration. Check the type of processor and memory you have on your system. Internet Explorer 4.0 requires a 486 with 8 MB of RAM on Windows 95 and 16 MB of RAM on Windows NT 4.0 The Active Setup Wizard says it is unable to retrieve the information needed for setup. This could be one of several things:
When I first ran the Wizard, I picked the Standard installation. How can I add more components? Run the Wizard again and select Upgrade Only. The Wizard will detect the previously installed items and install only newer items and items not installed. When I ran the Active Setup Wizard for the first time, it said I already had some items installed. How could that be? Some components in Internet Explorer 4.0 could have been installed previously as part of other products or as stand-alone products. The Wizard will not download components you already have.
