General InformationKnown by many as the Peach State, Georgia is a 58,060-square-mile land of rolling forestland, pristine ocean coastline and the southern Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains along the the state's northern border. Located due north of Florida and to the southeast of South Carolina, the state is rich with history, tradition, and genteel heritage. The Peach State holds 300,000 acres of reservoirs, 18 warmwater streams, 700 miles of trout water, and more than 40,000 lakes and ponds. The mountain streams of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains in north Georgia hold rainbow, brook and brown trout that have naturally reproducing populations in many of the watersheds. The reservoirs and numerous lakes and ponds hold largemouth and smallmouth bass, redeye bass, crappie, catfish, walleye, chain pickerel, crappie, white bass, and bluegill to some extent. Georgia is also blessed with nearly a thousand miles of Atlantic coastline which is a productive fishery for anadromous striped bass and American shad. Tarpon, red drum, and spotted sea trout are also favorite species for anglers who fish Georgia's coast. HuntingGeorgia's moss-draped swampland, pine forests and northern mountains offer habitat to white-tailed deer, black bear and wild turkey, classified by Georgia as big game. Feral hog, a wild version of the domesticated hog, is widely distributed throughout the state and is popular table fare for hunters. Bobcat, fox, opossum, rabbit, raccoon, and squirrel are small-game animals found in Georgia. Ruffed grouse, quail, dove, woodcock, snipe, marsh hen, ducks and geese all frequent Georgia and are sought by upland and waterfowl enthusiasts.
