Maximum

Takes the maximum value of two textures.

How Does It Work?

MAXIMUM combines two textures by taking the maximum value of the two.  For color MAXIMUM components, the maximum of the red, green, and blue color values are taken separately. Percent and bump MAXIMUM components simply take the maximum of the two texture values.

Use Thickness A and Thickness B to soften the transition between textures. For a hard material, bricks for example, set the Thickness to 100%.  Reduce the Thickness on softer materials, like slime, so that some of the underlying harder material shows through.  Set both Thicknesses to 100% to get an absolute maximum.

Although the color and percent MAXIMUM components are perfectly functional, the best use of MAXIMUM is to combine bump components. For example, taking the bump MAXIMUM of two stripe components, one rotated relative to the other, will create a grating or mesh texture.  Use Maximum Switch to get a color or percent texture that matches the results of MAXIMUM of two bump textures.

Hints!

A very powerful use of bump MAXIMUM is to link only one of the parameters to a child bump texture and manually adjust the other parameter to "fill in" the lowest portions of the linked bump with a flat surface. Doing this with MAXIMUM linked to a Fractal noise texture can look similar to raising the water level of a mountain lake (aerial view).

Common Parameters

Thickness A

Decreasing Thickness A allows you to see the underlying shape of the B material as it gets close to A's height.

Thickness B

Decreasing Thickness B allows you to see the underlying shape of the A material as it gets close to B's height.

Color Component Parameters

Color A

Color operand A in maximum(A,B).

Color B

Color operand B in maximum(A,B).

Percent Component Parameters

Percent A

Percent operand A in maximum(A,B).

Percent B

Percent operand B in maximum(A,B).

Bump Component Parameters

Bump A

Bump elevation operand A in maximum(A,B).

Bump B

Bump elevation operand B in maximum(A,B).
