Kagi Frequently Asked Question

Question:

What about the SPA (Software Publishers Association)?

Answer:

From the SPA: "SPA is the principal trade association for the software industry with over 1,200 members. Our members represent 85% of the US packaged software industry and include companies large and small from products for the consumer, business, education, internet and client/server markets worldwide. Member programs include intellectual property protection, resource publications (Boiler plate contracts, license agreements, copyright & patent information, marketing how-to's and channel distribution information), education and networking opportunities, Award programs and industry representation."

One aspect of the SPA is that they have been known to conduct software audits of companies on behalf of its members. When they conduct an audit, they are looking to see that all SPA member software titles are properly registered. If they find software that is published by someone who is not an SPA members, they ignore that software.

To give you an idea of the cost to join the SPA, dues for SPA members with revenues between $0 and $100000 as of August 1996 is $700 per year.
