Software Checklist

Components of the Window NT 4.0 Option Pack require the following software to be installed on the computer prior to the installation of the Option Pack:

Windows NT® Server version 4.0 or later.
Windows NT Service Pack 3.
Microsoft® Internet Explorer version 4.01 or later.
The Windows NT TCP/IP Protocol and Connectivity Utilities. If you are publishing on the Internet, your ISP must provide your server’s IP address, subnet mask, and the default gateway’s IP address. (The default gateway is the ISP computer through which your computer routes all Internet traffic.)
If the FTP service provided with Windows NT has been installed, you must remove it. Also remove any other previously installed Internet services.

The following optional components are recommended:

The Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) server or the Domain Name System (DNS) server installed on a computer in your intranet. If your intranetwork is small, you can use HOSTS or LMHOSTS files on all computers in your network. This step is optional, but it does allow users to use “friendly” text names instead of IP addresses.On the Internet, Web sites usually use the Domain Name System. If you register a domain name for your site, users can type your site’s domain name in a browser to contact your site.
For security purposes, Microsoft recommends that all drives used with IIS be formatted with the Windows NT File System (NTFS).
Microsoft® FrontPage® to create and edit HTML pages for your Web site. FrontPage is a WYSIWYG editor that provides a friendly, graphical interface for tasks such as inserting tables, graphics, and scripts.
Microsoft® Visual InterDev™ to create and develop interactive Web applications.

Note You can administer a server running Internet Information Server from a remote computer running Windows NT Workstation. Install Internet Explorer 4.0, the Microsoft Management Console, and the Internet Service Manager snap-in on the remote computer, and then connect to the server you want to administer. Or, you can use Internet Service Manager (HTML) with a browser to administer your site.
