Remote Administration

You can use Internet Service Manager to administer servers on your local network, or across the Internet. IIS also includes a browser-based Internet Service Manager (HTML) for administration of your Web sites over an intranet or the Internet. For a Windows NT administrator to use the Internet Service Manager (HTML) remotely to administer IIS, the administrator must have the Administration Web site port number. The port number can be found on the Web Site property sheet for the Administration Web Site in the Internet Service Manager snap-in.

To use the Internet Service Manager snap-in remotely
  1. Install Internet Service Manager on any computer on your network running either Windows NT Server version 4.0, or Windows NT Workstation version 4.0.
  2. To find the installation of IIS on the network that you want to administer, click the computer icon on the toolbar.
  3. Note   If you have TCP/IP and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) installed on your network, all the computers running IIS on your network appear in the tree view. If you do not have WINS installed to resolve names, you may see only those installations of IIS that are on the same subnet as the computer you are using. If you use the snap-in remotely over the Internet, you may encounter problems if the ports typically used for NetBIOS access over TCP/IP have been disabled for security reasons.

Note   Logging modules are not installed in Internet Service Manager (HTML) until the Microsoft Management Console is run. The Active log format list box will read, "No logging modules are currently installed." To install the logging modules in Internet Service Manager (HTML), run the non-HTML Internet Service Manager.

To start the browser-based Internet Service Manager (HTML) locally
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, then Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, and then Microsoft Internet Information Server.
  2. Click Internet Service Manager (HTML) to launch the browser and access the administration Web site.
