The American phone company AT&T now offers a service called Language Line, whereby anyone with a credit card and prepared to pay $3-50 per minute can set up via the operator a conference call between themselves and a client - with the AT&T translator for the language of their choice.

More than 140 languages are on offer, including less familiar ones such as Wolo, Punjabi and Tajiki. Users of the Language Line include schools for their parent-teacher conferences and police trying to cope with foreign language neighbourhoods.
