Microfiche Publishing

John Zube of Libertarian MicroFiche Publishing in Australia, believes that many people could afford to publish their own specialist books using a microfiche service bureau. Main public libraries in the UK have microfiche readers (or one can be bought second-hand from about L100); and on the more expensive models (costing from about L600 second-hand) photocopies can be taken from the machine. Some microfiche readers can even be used in bed, projecting the page onto the ceiling.

'Using this modern and affordable technology (via a service bureau), you too could afford to publish every year, dozens of books, magazines or newsletters'

Microfiche books could be sent to colleagues for free, or sold to libraries. Since 1978, for instance, John Zube, with a shoestring budget and working part-time, has become the largest publisher of libertarian books in the world, with over 500 titles in his catalogue, selling at over 100 pages per microfiche for one Australian dollar. 'The books I produce,' says Zube, 'are largely out of print or with no copyright claimed. Any author who publishes a new work through me does so on a non-exclusive basis and is free to revoke permission to me at any time if a regular book publisher becomes interested.'

Zube stresses that 'using this modern and affordable technology (via a service bureau), you too could afford to publish every year, dozens of books, magazines or newsletters.'
