Firemen's skin to a tissue culture in case needed

Adapted extract from an idea posted to the Internet Creativity group run by Keith Hudson - accessible under the 'Teams' heading via the New Civilization World Wide Web page at <http://www.newciv.org/worldtrans/newcivnet.html>.

In a conversation with a medical student, I discussed the problems of tissue cultures. Basically, it is not difficult. Human skin can easily be made to grow as a tissue culture.

So this idea occurred to me. Those persons involved in high risk jobs, taking firemen as an example, should donate some of their skin to seed a tissue culture. This culture would be farmed in a local skin repository with the fireman's name on it. If ever that fireman were to suffer serious burns, the immediate availability of his own skin would improve his chances of survival. The skin that was surplus to requirements could be donated to medical research.

Flow General Inc. has this capability in place over 14 years ago, but the capability did not bloom commercially at that time.
