Non-religious naming ceremonies in church

Valerie Yule

This letter extends the Family Covenant Association's award-winning ideas for non-religious ceremonies (see page 10 of R-Inventing Society, Institute for Social Inventions, 1994).

I have always thought that churches should be willing to have naming ceremonies for babies, a ritual to help parents to love and care for them, and to declare the child in the world, as a rite of passage. Christian baptism can be fairly kept for the parents who can make Christian promises. It is sad when parents are turned away from the latter when what they really want is the former.
