University credits earned by community service

Information adapted from an item in the Times (Jan 25th '95) by Jill Sherman.

The Labour Party has proposed that students could help to pay their way through university by doing nine months of community service after they leave school.

David Blunkett, the Shadow Education Secretary, said recently, 'We should consider offering credits for further or higher education for those who have undertaken citizen's service. It will then not be viewed as something simply for those who have failed within the system but a programme and a foundation for life.'
