Less stress for chickens in red light

From the New Scientist.

Tony Boyle of Blackloch Farm in Perth, believes he has found a simple way to make hens lay brown eggs to order.

In his patent (2 271 497) Boyle says that when hens are kept under red light for several weeks, their eggs get progressively browner. Eventually, older hens lay the same colour eggs as new pullets. They also stay younger, longer.

When they return to white light, the hens start laying white eggs again, show symptoms of stress and die more quickly. 'In my opinion,' says Boyle, 'the use of red light should be made compulsory.'
