Curing check-out scanner stress

Adapted extract from an item in The Wall Street Journal (April 28th '94) monitored for the Institute by Roger Knights.

Grocery chains are finding ways to cope with scanner-related injuries among check-out staff. Steele's Markets in Colorado designed check-out stands in a store so that half had scanners on the right and the rest on the left. It then arranged shifts so workers alternated between the two. Steele's has since seen 35% fewer workers' compensation claims in that store compared with other outlets. It plans to convert half the stands at other stores, at the cost of $500 per stand.
