Clay balcony pots for composting

From Warmer Bulletin (the excellent free magazine, published The Warmer Campaign, 83 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 8BS, tel 0892 524626; fax 0892 525827).

In Patna, in Bihar State, India, a city with no door-to-door garbage collection, clay pots on balconies and window sills are beginning to be used for composting. Equal weights of vegetable waste and soil - with the soil supplemented with dust and grit sweepings from the floor and dried moss from the roof tops - produces a compost that matures in three to four months. Spinach, tomatoes, etc, can then be grown directly from the pots.
