One thing you can try, with a little patience.

Boot from the 3.5 rescue floppy, or a 3.1 boot disk, if that will work. Copy
down, or print your Startup-Sequence & User-Startup. Use the early menu to
boot without a startup sequence. When you reach the Shell start typing in
your S-S without the 'quiet' & to 'nil's. This will tell you some of what's
going on & you may find the command that causes the trouble.
