1885 - The roller coaster was patented by L.A. Thompson of, where else, Coney Island, NY. His coaster was 450 feet long with the highest drop being 30 feet. Just a bit smaller than the 1990s roller coasters that are guaranteed to make you lose your lunch; not to mention any loose pocket change.
