Science first Date: 1/7/1998 URL: http://www.thehistorynet.com/AviationHistory/articles/0996_text.htm Info: 1785 - Balloonist Jean-Pierre Blanchard successfully made the first solo crossing of the English Channel from the English coast to France. Mr. Blanchard and his passenger had to shed all of their clothes as the wind died and the balloon's airbag cooled too quickly over the sea. Now wait just a second! Clothes don't weigh all THAT much, do they? What a chintzy way to get somebody to take off their clothes! What a great pick-up line! "Hey, babe, um, could I convince you to, um, maybe take off your clothes before we become fish food? Blanchard not only is noted for this remarkable achievement, he also owns the record for the most consecutive number of times saying, "Gosh, I hope we make it," during one trip."
