Worm Hotel

Dateline: 05/15/98

A worm is a very small animal without legs. It gets around by using muscles and tiny bristles. Earthworms live in burrows in the ground; they don't like daylight and they REALLY don't like robins! To collect worms for your worm hotel you will be able to find them much easier on a rainy day. Worms come out at night, you can easily find them at night in your backyard by using a flashlight and scooping them up quickly. In the daytime you must dig for worms in the soil using a shovel. This is because they stay in their homes in the ground during the daylight hours. If you want a very easy way to find your worms you can buy a supply from a fishing bait shop.

supplies

  • a tall narrow olive or pickle jar
  • soil
  • water
  • black paper
  • rubberbands
  • small bits of grass
  • leaves
  • lettuce
  • coffee grounds

what to do

  • Collect some earthworms.
  • Collect enough soil to fill the narrow jar.
  • Fill the jar with damp soil - be sure it's not too wet as this will drown the worms.
  • Place the worms in the soil.
  • Put bits of food (lettuce, grass, leaves, coffee grounds) into the jar on the top of the soil.
  • Wrap the jar with black paper and secure with two rubber bands.
  • Remove the paper the next day to see how the worms have burrowed along the glass. Did they eat any food?
  • Keep for several days. Can you discover their favorite foods?
  • Release the worms in a safe place. Check in awhile. How long does it take for them to burrow back into the ground?

Want to do more?

Learn about the foods that worms live on. They live on organic matter (things that were once alive) like dead animals, insect parts, dead leaves, and other plant parts. Try to move your body like a worm, withpout using your arms and legs!
