Pandas, Tigers & Frogs

Dateline: 10/06/97

This week we will look at three species which are being affected by the environment.

Pandas

Conservation of Pandas
Whatever the number of pandas surviving in the wild, it is quite clear that the giant panda will become extinct in the next century unless more steps are taken to protect its habitat.

All About Pandas
Links to panda articles in its ZooGoer magazine, other panda facts, a panda "obstacle course" game for kids, an animated map that shows the panda's decline, and more.

Tigers

Threats
At the beginning of this century it is estimated that there were 100,00 wild tigers, today the number is less than 8,000. Simply put, tigers are disappearing in the wild. The main threats to tigers are poaching, habitat loss and population fragmentation.

The Tiger - Vanishing With Barely A Whimper
This beautiful animal, the wonderful creature of nursery, fiction and poetry, the awe-inspiring linchpin of myth, legend and religion, is about to become extinct. But how is it that the largest of the big cats has reached this state and what, if anything can be done to ensure its recovery?

Tiger Watch
A great collection of tiger conservatoin resources.

Frogs

Goliath Frog
The goliath is the world's largest frog; its body can be more than a foot long, and its entire length, back legs extended, is often more than two and a half feet. The goliath is threatened through habitat loss, deforestation, dam building, and private collectors.

Deformed Frogs
Find out the latest about deformed frogs in Minnesota.
