Autumn - The Colors of Our Changing Season

Kindergarten Leaf Collection

For_Ages = 5-6 (kindergarten)
Description = Kindergarten students throughout the Northern Hemisphere will collect 100 leaves. 25 schools will be selected from those registered and the participants will send 4 laminated leaves to each of the 25 kindergarten classrooms.
Each class will decide how to display their leaf collection (100 leaves from different addresses) on a mural. Ideas for a mural include a graph of different types of leaves, a painted tree with leaves falling down, a favorite shape, letter, or number outlined by leaves, a Fall wreath with leaves, children hats with leaves or any other creative idea.
A 4"x 6" pictures will be sent to project coordinator via regular mail. Sharing of pictures will be done via e-mail.

Timeline=
October 10, 1997- Registration deadline
October 24, 1997- Finish leaf collection
November 7, 1997- 4 leaves are sent to the 25 schools
November 28, 1997- Send pictures to the contact person.
December, 1997- Sharing of the project is expected.
Objectives =
Science- Students will observe different kinds of leaves and make comparisons with other types that are of different colors and shapes.
Students will talk about weather changes during the Fall season.
Language Arts- Students will use oral language while explaining to the teacher their ideas about what to do with their leaf collection.
Students could dictate their comments for the teacher to write during Shared Writing.
Social Studies- Students will cooperate with others while working on the display. Students will learn about the job of raking.
Students will learn about their community mailing system.
Students could look up their collecting friends state/country on a class map.
Math- Students will count the leaves inside each of the 25 different envelopes that arrives.
Student could make comparisons of most frequent leaf, or about the largest leaf from their collection.
Technology- Students will, with the help of their teacher, use telecommunications to facilitate their leaf collection and exchange.

Share = The results of our project will be shared by e-mailing our participants with all the school pictures.
The coordinator will scan all pictures and attach them to e-mails.
Participants are welcomed to shared their experiences with other Kindergarten children.
