Pet Rocks on Parade

Dateline: 04/16/98

Rock collecting is one phase of exploring the environment. Perhaps you have collected rocks on your travels and have placed them away and have forgotten about them. This is a good project for school where you and your classmates can show off your minerals and rocks.

Supplies

  • rocks and minerals
  • dried grass
  • leaves
  • sticks
  • egg cartons (cut into thirds)
  • magnifiers

What to do

  • Children bring rocks to school.
  • Collect materials so that the children can create a home for the rocks. A natural "rock bed" might be dried grass, a nice leaf or two, and sticks.
  • Once the rocks have homes, each child can take a turn tellling the rock's story. The story can be real or pretend.
  • Place the rocks on display for continued sharing. Use magnifiers to take a closer look.

Want to do more?

Rocks can be grouped or classified. Compare them to other rock collections. Visit a geology display. How do the rocks change when they are wet? What are the different textures of the rocks?

Lately I have been getting many questions about science and nature. I enjoy helping you with your homework and projects. I have had some problems when replying. Often the message bounces back because of an error in the Email address. If you have a question you need answered, it is better to post it to the bulletin board. This way you will be sure to get your answer.
