General Tips

To ensure that dates in Word documents are represented correctly in date-related calculations, insert Date field types with four-digit years.

Word 2000 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Word (Macintosh) 98 (English)
Word 97 8.0 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Word 95 7.XX - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Word 6.XX - 16-Bit Windows (English)
Word (Macintosh) 6.XX (English)
Word 5.5 - DOS (English)
Word (Macintosh) 5.1a (English)
Word 5.0 - DOS (English)
Word 2.0 - 16-Bit Windows (English)

Word 6.XX (Macintosh)

Recommendation: No action necessary.

Date handling: Dates imported from another program or entered with an Insert Date/Time command are not handled as date values.

Two-digit shortcuts for years are interpreted to be in the 1900s (with the exception of 00, which is interpreted as the year 2000).

For more information: See the Word 6.XX (Macintosh) Product Guide document.

Word 5.5 - DOS

Recommendation: Workaround for the Date handling issues described below: Use four-digit dates for summary information and macros. Also avoid the display of dates in annotations.

Date handling: Word 5.5 interprets two-digit years to be in the1900s when dates are entered into summary information or file search criteria. Word also interprets two-digit years in macros to be in the 1900s.

If the user selects the option to include dates in annotations, Word 5.5 displays annotation dates in a 3-digit format after 1999 (e.g., the year 2000 displays as 100, 2001 displays as 101, and so on).

For more information: See the Word 5.5 Product Guide document and Knowledge Base article, "Word for MS-DOS: Corruption When Updating Summary Information".

Word 5.1a (Macintosh)

Recommendation: No action necessary.

Date handling: Word 5.1a does not interpret two-digit shortcuts for years as date values.

For more information: See the Word 5.1a (Macintosh) Product Guide document.

Word 5.0 - DOS

Recommendation: Install the complimentary upgrade to Microsoft Word 5.5 for MS-DOS. To request this upgrade on CD-ROM, call 1-888-MFST-Y2K toll-free.

Date handling: If the system clock is set to the year 2000 or later, the "creation date:" and "revision date:" for documents will default to invalid dates.

For more information: See the Word 5.0 Product Guide document.

Word 2.0 - 16-Bit Windows

Recommendation: See the paper "Find File Fails with Dates Beyond Year 2000" for information on how to work around this issue.

Date handling: In Table/Sort and in Microsoft Word fields, two-digit shortcuts for years are interpreted to be in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Word 2.0 Product Guide document.
