General Tips

Set the short date format to display four-digit years, both in your computer's Control Panel Regional Settings and in the default display formatting for each Office program.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use for information on how they handle dates.

Office 2000 Professional - 32-Bit Windows(English)
Office Professional 97 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Professional 95 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Professional 4.XX - 16-Bit Windows (English)

Office 2000 Professional - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: No action necessary.

Date handling: Dates are displayed with two- or four-digit years according to the date format selected by the user.

If the last two digits of the year are pasted from one vintage of an Office program into another, the date might be interpreted differently than the originating program interpreted it.

On Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems, Outlook interprets two-digit shortcuts 00 - 29 to be between 2000 and 2029; two-digit shortcuts 30 - 99 are interpreted to be between 1930 and 1999.

On the Windows 98 operating system, Outlook interprets two-digit shortcuts to be years in the range specified on the Date tab in Regional Settings.

The Birthday and Anniversary fields in Outlook 2000 accept dates 95 years back and 5 years forward from the current date. The Inbox Assistant and Out of Office Assistant's Advanced rule settings use the range of 1980 - 2079; and the Import/Export Wizard operates through the year 2035.

By default, other Office 2000 programs interpret two-digit shortcuts 00 - 29 to be between 2000 and 2029 and shortcuts 30 - 99 are interpreted to be between 1930 and 1999.

For more information: See the Office 2000 Professional Product Guide document. See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use.

Office Professional 97 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install Office 97 Service Release 2. To request the update on CD-ROM call 888-673-8925 toll free.

Microsoft also recommends installing the updated version of Microsoft Jet 3.5 and the O97dtfix.exe.

If you use Internet Explorer 4.01, install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 and the Outlook Express 4.01 SP1 Year 2000 Update.

OR, install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 and the Outlook Express 4.01 SP2 Year 2000 Update.

Date handling: Years are displayed in two- or four-digit year dates according to the date format selected by the user.

With Service Release 2 installed:

Outlook 97 properly handles two-digit shortcuts for years when scheduling events that span the century boundary.

Other Office 97 programs interpret two-digit shortcuts 00 - 29 to be between 2000 and 2029; two-digit shortcuts 30 - 99 are interpreted to be between 1930 and 1999.

Dates are stored in the correct format when you save a PowerPoint version 7.0 file in PowerPoint 4.0 format.

With the O97dtfix.exe installed, Outlook 97 correctly imports and exports Year 2000 dates.
