1. Dropping the atomic bomb during World War II (1945)
The United States used the
first atomic weapons during World War II, bombing the Japanese cities
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Creation of the atomic bomb
unleashed the terrifying possibilities of atomic energy and launched
a frantic search for peaceful uses of atomic energy even as more powerful
bombs were being developed.
