Much of the technology of the 1900's resulted from the introduction of new materials. Aluminum and alloy steels, for example, contributed to the evolution of aircraft into a reliable and safe component of the world's transportation network. These materials also played a key role in the development of rocketry. Plastics and other polymers came into widespread use. Today, manufacturers use them to make the casings of telephones, televisions, radios, and computer chips. In addition, plastics are used to produce film, pipes, garden hoses, garbage bags, automobile parts, CD's, computer keyboards, and thousands of other items. More information: |
