travel news review

16 October '98
Rebel troops have taken control of the city of Khudzhand, 200 km (125 mi) north of the Tajikistan capital, Dushanbe. A state of emergency has been declared and all government troops have been called in. The rebels have taken over government buildings and the airport in Khudzhand as well as closing off the only road from Khudzhand to the capital.

While in the past travel has been possible in Tajikistan, in the past couple of months the situation for travellers has deteriorated considerably. There is currently no embassy or consular services in Tajikistan and now is not a good time to consider a trip to the country.
