    Travel Tips

In my first month of travelling on a train from Paris to Berlin, the ticket collector asked for my ticket, looked it over and stated that I needed to pay an additional DM 50 to ride this IC train. He said it was because the train was going to go through Belgium and that was not covered in my pass. I had a three month unlimited Eurail Youth Pass.

There is a railway pass called the "GO-pass" which makes rail travel for those under 26 considerably cheaper. The GO-pass permits ten single journeys wherever in the country. The pass is valid for six months and can be used by different people (ie a group of five making return trips). I'm not sure about the current price but its around 1,399 Bfr (US$40). For short distances, this works out more expensive than regular tickets, but if you are travelling from Kortrijk to Brussels, for example, the price difference is considerable.

For photography buffs, there is a museum in Antwerp called History of Photography. It's free and the best photography museum I've ever seen. There are three levels to explore; the ground level has the contemporary exhibitions by both new, up and coming photographers, and by the renowned masters of photography. The second and third levels are dedicated to the history of photography and display cameras and related equipment from the Camera Obscura to the latest digital cameras. There is also a room with viewing booths to look at old photographs of Belgium. It's really interesting to see what Belgium looked like in earlier times. There are also a few photos of other prominent cities over Europe. The museum is open all year round, you can get more details info from the Belgian tourist board, which is in Grote Markt 15, Antwerp (tel: 232 0103)

You can get lost in Brugge looking at all the lace and chocolate shops! After you've bought enough doilies and stuffed your face on chocolate, go on a boat canal tour. For only US$4.50 you get a guided "Lake of Love" tour around the best of Brugges canals. The tours are given in four different languages (all on the one tour) so sit back and enjoy the scenery while touching up on your Flemish. They last for about half hour, and are a great way to see Brugge. It takes you through places which would be harder to see on foot. One of the attractions is to see the smallest gothic window in Europe.

Stavelot, the heart of the Belgian woods, holds many magnificent walking trails along rivers, up mountains and through forests. It look beautiful during Autumn, when the trees are full of vibrant yellows, reds and oranges.
