    Country Updates

Guinea-Bissau's currency used to be the peso, a notoriously weak currency, but in mid-1997 the country joined the CFA franc zone. By the end of 1997 the peso had been completely withdrawn. Guinea-Bissau's official currency is now the West African CFA.

Exchange rates in late 1997 were: US1 = cfa580, UK#1 = cfa980, but for consistency you might want to keep them the same as whatever you're quoted in all the other CFA countries (they should all be the same anyway).Because prices in the 8th edition of LP's guide to Africa are in US dollars, these are all pretty much unchanged.

The bus in Bissau city is no longer running.

Getting to/from Ziguinchor is now easier.

    Visas, Embassies & Border Crossings

The Gambia (Banjul) seemed to be a good place for cheap visas. For Guinea-Bissau I paid D 100 and got a one month visa within five minutes.

    Travel tips

DonÆt use the black market to change money. After hard bargaining I was promised 1.000 000 pesos (the bank would have given me 980,000), but my greediness got punished and I ended up getting ripped off even after counting my money about five times.
