DESTINATION SUDAN

Travellers are strongly advised to avoid going to or through Sudan. It has been at war with itself for 16 years, with a mounting death toll that's already reached 1.5 million. Its democratically elected government was overthrown in a coup in 1989. Its constitution was abrogated, its press silenced, its political parties and trade unions outlawed. Then the famine hit. Then the famine hit again, and again. The effect of the famines, especially in the south, has been staggering. Millions have starved to death, and over a million are currently at very high risk of dying of malnutrition. Major epidemics of meningitis and malaria are ravaging the country and threatening the capital of Khartoum.
