S
tanding proud on the water's edge, the Citadel looks as though it still defends the old town.
It was built in 1557 on the site of a smaller fort on the orders of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, by his architect, Provana de Leyni. Today, it houses the Town hall, an auditorium, the Goetz-Boumeester museum, the Volti Foundation museum, as well as the City of Arts, displaying the ransoms taken during the Battle of Saint Quentin. A century later, they were the pride of Vauban, at the time when Louis XIV twice took over the county of Nice. The Citadel and the fort of Mount Alban were all that survived when the Sun King ordered the demolition of the defences of the county of Nice. The walls of the Citadel have been arranged with gardens and footpaths. These improvements were made during the Thirties by Clonel Duval and Robert Reuter, presidents of the Syndicats d'Initiative (tourist office). Afterwards, at the fort entrance on the East Wall, the town built a memorial in remembrance of the 24th, 64th and 7th Alpine Infantry Battalions of Villefranche. |

e dressant fièrement au bord de mer, la CITADELLE semble continuer à défendre la vieille cité : elle fut édifiée en 1557 sur un ancien fortin sur ordre d'Emmanuel Philibert Duc de Savoie, par son architecte Provena de Leyni.
Elle abrite aujourd'hui l'Hòtel de Ville, un auditorium, un musée GOETZ-BOUMEESTER, la Fondation-Musée VOLTI ainsi que la Cité des métiers d'arts avec les énormesrançons provenant de la bataille de Saint Quentin. Une centaine d'années après, elle fut l'admiration de Vauban, lorsque Louis XIV reprit - par deux fois - le Comté de Nice. La Citadelle et la Fort du Mont Alban furent seuls épargnés, quand le Roi Soliel ordonna la démolition de toutes les défenses du Comté de Nice. Les glacis de la Citadelle sont aménagés en jardins et promonades.C'est au cours des années 30 que le Colonal Duval et M. Robert Reuter, présidents du S.I., commencèrent ces aménagements. Par la suite, la comune fit ériger sur le glacis Est, à l'entrée du fort, le monument aux morts des 24e, 64e, et 7e Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins qui tinrent garnison à Villefranche. |
