  4. Installation
  5. ------------
  6.  
  7. To begin SuperPrint installation, place the system disk in Drive A:
  8. and start Windows. From the Program Manager, choose Run... on the File
  9. menu. Enter A:\SETUP in the Command Line box and follow the instructions
  10. on the screen.
  11.  
  12. We recommend that you accept SETUP's defaults, including automatic
  13. loading of SuperText and SuperQueue. If you wish to undo automatic
  14. loading, simply use NOTEPAD or other ASCII text editor to remove
  15. SUPERQUE and SUPERTXT from the LOAD= line found near the beginning of
  16. your WIN.INI file.
  17.  
  18. The disk space required to install all typefaces, their associated
  19. foundries, plus the SuperQueue and SuperText programs is ###K bytes.
  20. Each printer driver and help file you install will consume an additional
  21. 50K to 70K.
  22.  
  23. If you accept the default installation, you should see a small window
  24. showing the Zenographics Font Metrics File being built. This is a one-
  25. time procedure that should not reoccur unless you install or remove
  26. typefaces using SuperText.

  28. About SuperDriver
  29. -----------------

  31. Setting up your SuperDriver is very similar to setting up any Windows
  32. printer driver. You will find there are more options than most other
  33. drivers. The Help button in the SuperDriver Setup dialog explains
  34. each option.
  35.  
  36. We recommend that immediately after installing SuperPrint, you double-
  37. click Printers in the Control Panel, choose a SuperDriver, choose
  38. Configure, choose Setup, then choose the Help button.
  39.  
  40. Your working model SuperDriver places a non-removable message window
  41. on your printed page.
  42.  
  43. About SuperText
  44. ---------------
  45.  
  46. SuperText generates Windows screen fonts in any size (within Windows'
  47. limitations). When running Windows in Standard (286) mode, the limit on
  48. font size depends on available RAM and available disk space. However, 
  49. 386 Enhanced mode and some drivers in 286 mode contain bugs that limit
  50. screen font files to 64 Kbytes.
  51.  
  52. To initiate fonts on the fly, start SuperText if it isn't already
  53. running, or restore its window if it's an icon. Choose On the fly...
  54. from the menu bar. Click the ON button, click OK, and minimize the
  55. SuperText window. Now, whenever an application asks for a screen font,
  56. SuperText will build it automatically in the background.
  57.  
  58. To turn off fonts on the fly, choose On the fly... from the menu bar
  59. and click the off button, then click OK. You can also simply close
  60. SuperText.
  61.  
  62. SuperText also allows you to add new typefaces to your system. Your
  63. working model only allows the use of Digital Typeface Corp. Nimbus Q
  64. typefaces. However, your working model has no other restrictions and
  65. can be used to make screen fonts regardless of which printer driver
  66. you use.
  67.  
  68. About SuperQueue
  69. ----------------
  70.  
  71. SuperQueue performs true multitasking background printing. For this to
  72. work, two things must be set: SuperQueue must be running in Server
  73. Mode, and your SuperDriver must be set to Queue for later.

  75. To initiate Server Mode, start SuperQueue if it isn't already running,
  76. or restore its window if it's an icon. Choose Server Mode from the
  77. Processing menu, then minimize the SuperQueue window.
  78.  
  79. To set Queue for later, use Printers in the Control Panel or Printer
  80. Setup in your application to access the SuperDriver setup. Make sure
  81. the check box next to Queue for later has an X through it.
  82.  
  83. SuperQueue only works with SuperDrivers. It does not work with any
  84. standard Windows printer drivers.

  86. Help files
  87. ----------
  88.  
  89. Both SuperQueue and SuperText have extensive on-line help. We
  90. recommend that you examine the help files to become more familiar with
  91. all of these programs' capabilities.

  94. General Notes
  95. -------------
  96. In low memory conditions, you may find that printing becomes very slow.
  97. A good indicator of this problem is when your hard disk light is very
  98. active during printing. If this is the case, turn Queue for later on
  99. in your SuperDriver, but do not run SuperQueue when printing. This
  100. creates a spool file to disk. When this is finished, close your
  101. application, start SuperQueue, and select Nonstop Mode from the
  102. Processing Menu. Then choose Add jobs from the file menu, highlight
  103. the files with .SMF extensions, and click OK. Then click the GO!
  104. button. This lets SuperDriver use all available memory for printing.
  105.  
  106. When the Zenographics Font Metrics (ZFM) file is being built, unless you
  107. have lots of available memory, allow the process to complete before
  108. beginning to work.  There is considerable disk activity during this
  109. process, and ZFM building will take longer to complete if you launch
  110. other applications at the same time.

  114. Using SuperPrint with Adobe Type Manager (ATM) 1.0
  115. --------------------------------------------------
  116.  
  117. The retail version of SuperPrint can use the Adobe Type 1 typefaces
  118. that come with ATM and any of the add-on typeface packages for ATM.
  119. Your working model does not.
  120.  
  121. It is possible to run both SuperPrint and ATM at the same time,
  122. although with the full retail version of SuperPrint we think you don't
  123. need ATM at all.

  125. When you print with both ATM and SuperPrint active, ATM generates its
  126. fonts and passes the character images to the SuperDriver as bitmaps.
  127. This is less efficient than the usual scheme where Windows passes the
  128. text requests directly to SuperDriver.  Unfortunately, when you turn ATM
  129. off in the ATM Control Panel, it doesn't really turn off until you
  130. re-start Windows!

  132. Note that ATM uses non-discardable memory for its font cache, while
  133. SuperText's (and Windows) screen fonts are always discardable, and are
  134. re-loaded from disk on demand.  In plain English, this means that ATM's
  135. font cache takes memory away when you start Windows, and never gives it
  136. back until you stop Windows.  Discardable memory means that Windows can
  137. discard it to let some other task use the memory.

  140. Using SuperPrint with Bitstream Facelift 1.0
  141. --------------------------------------------
  142.  
  143. The retail version of SuperPrint can use the typefaces that come with
  144. Facelift and any of its add-on typeface packages.  Your working model
  145. cannot.  SuperText "On the Fly" cannot run at the same time as FaceLift.

  148. DOS 4.0, SHARE.EXE, and SuperQueue in Server Mode
  149. -------------------------------------------------
  150.  
  151. Apparently some versions of DOS 4.0 support hard disk partitions
  152. greater than 32MB and don't need SHARE.EXE.  We have observed that on some
  153. computers, SuperQueue reports a SuperMetafile Read Error when trying
  154. to access a SuperMetafile that your application is in the middle of creating.
  155. Install SHARE.EXE by inserting the following in your CONFIG.SYS:
