  2. Da Vinci eMAIL Demonstration Kit
  3.  
  4. This kit contains two different versions of eMAIL, designed to run
  5. under DOS and    Microsoft Windows 3.0. These are NOT slide shows: they
  6. are actual versions of the commercial eMAIL products.  However, before
  7. running eMAIL, you should read this file to learn the features and 
  8. limitations of the demo kit.
  9.

  11. IMPORTANT NOTE
  12.  
  13. The eMAIL programs on this kit are configured to run ONLY OFF DRIVE A.
  14. If you attempt to run this kit from a drive other than A:, or copy it
  15. onto your hard drive or network, the software WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY.
  16.  
  17. However, it is possible to create a demo kit on your hard drive or network
  18. by using the program MOVEDEMO.BAT.  Instructions on using MOVEDEMO are given
  19. at the end of this text file.
  20.  
  21. NOTE:  If you attempt to run the MOVEDEMO.BAT program from your B: drive, it 
  22. will fail.  In order to successfully use MOVEDEMO.BAT from the B: drive, you
  23. will need to use the DOS ASSIGN command.  At the prompt, simply type
  24. ASSIGN A=B.  At this point, calls to the A: drive will be redirected to the
  25. B: drive.  At this point, you will be able to successfully run the demos or
  26. the MOVEDEMO.BAT program from your B: drive.  After you have run the
  27. required programs, reset your drive by typing ASSIGN and then enter.

  30. Using the Demo Kit
  31.  
  32. There are three ways that you can use this kit to learn about eMAIL.
  33.  
  34. 1) A short (c. 5 minutes) demonstration of eMAIL for DOS is included in
  35.    this kit.  To see this demonstration, simply type DOSDEMO.
  36.  
  37. 2) A mailbox has been created for a user named GARY.  Run eMAIL (any
  38.    version), log in as GARY, and read through your mail.  The messages
  39.    will tell you about various parts of the eMAIL system.
  40.  
  41.    To run eMAIL for DOS,  type EMAIL.
  42.    To run eMAIL for Windows 3.0,  double-click on EMAILW30.EXE.
  43.  
  44.    Both programs will then ask for a username: give the name GARY and
  45.    any password you like.  (The commercial version of eMAIL is not so
  46.    forgiving about names and passwords, of course.)  DOS users can avoid
  47.    the login box by using a command-line parameter: type EMAIL GARY.

  49. 3) Try eMAIL for yourself!  Run eMAIL (any version), and log in by any
  50.    name with any password (see instructions above).  Send a message to
  51.    any user by any name.  Then log in as that user and receive the message.
  52.    Note that the sender and the receiver do NOT have to use the same
  53.    version of eMAIL, since both versions are totally compatible with
  54.    each other!

  57. Important Limitation
  58.  
  59. In this demonstration kit, you can only have ONE WAITING MESSAGE PER USER.
  60. In other words, if you send two messages to ELENA and then log in as ELENA,
  61. you will receive only the second message.  The commercial version of eMAIL
  62. suffers from no such limitation, of course.

  65. Creating a Demonstration Kit on your Hard Drive or Network
  66.  
  67. This demonstration kit is configured to run ONLY OFF DRIVE A.  If you simply
  68. copy it to your network, it will NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY.

  70. The program MOVEDEMO.BAT has therefore been provided.  To run MOVEDEMO,
  71. designate a directory on your hard drive or network as an eMAIL directory
  72. (e.g. M:\EMAIL).  Then type MOVEDEMO with that directory as a parameter:
  73. for instance, you might type MOVEDEMO M:\EMAIL.  A demonstration kit will
  74. be created in the directory you specify; MOVEDEMO will tell you what
  75. directory you can run eMAIL from in that demo kit.

  77. IMPORTANT: you MUST GIVE MOVEDEMO an ABSOLUTE PATH!  For instance, typing
  78.  
  79. MOVEDEMO M:\EMAIL
  80.  
  81. will create a valid demo kit.  Typing  
  82.  
  83. MOVEDEMO M:   (no backslash -- WRONG!)
  84.  
  85. will create an unusable    demo kit.

  88. ──────────────────────────
  89. DDE Macros for Windows 3.0
  90.  
  91. eMAIL for Windows fully supports the Microsoft DDE spec, which allows
  92. Windows applications to exchange information in real time.  You can
  93. therefore write your own DDE macros that give different Windows applications
  94. access to eMAIL.
  95.  
  96. Two such macros have been included on this disk: one that lets you send
  97. messages from Excel, and one that lets you send messages and view Word
  98. attachments from Microsoft Word.
  99.  
  100. If you have Microsoft Word for Windows, run Word and open the file
  101. EMAILW30.DOC.  This document explains how you can install eMAIL into your
  102. Word menus.  Once eMAIL is installed, you can compose messages in Word and
  103. then send them FROM WITHIN WORD.  You can also read Word files that are
  104. Attached to eMAIL messages; again, without leaving Word.

  106. From Excel, load the file EMAILW30.XLM to install the macro.  Again, you
  107. will then be able to choose an "eMAIL" menu item to create eMAIL messages
  108. without leaving the application.  This macro, in its current form, is less
  109. useful than its Word counterpart; however, it demonstrates the ease of
  110. DDE inter-application access, and it could be modified to format a message
  111. automatically based on a particular spreadsheet (e.g. a financial report).
