  63.     | "Shareware" is a term used to describe a system for distribution         
  64.     | of software.  Under the shareware concept, software may be freely        
  65.     | copied and passed along to others, or distributed through bulletin       
  66.     | board systems, etc.                                                      
  67.     |                                                                          
  68.     | As a recipient of a shareware program, you may use the software          
  69.     | for a short trial period to determine if it meets your needs.  If        
  70.     | it does, you pay the registration fee.  By paying the fee, you are       
  71.     | granted the right to retain the software for your use.  If the           
  72.     | software is not suitable, then you may discard it.                       
  73.     |                                                                          
  74.     | The shareware system provides substantial benefits the computing         
  75.     | community (of which YOU are a member):                                   
  76.     |                                                                          
  77.     | 1) You get to try out the software BEFORE you buy it so you know         
  78.     |    exactly what you're buying.                                           
  79.     |                                                                          
  80.     | 2) Shareware is substantially less expensive than most commercial        
  81.     |    programs.  You don't pay for costly marketing programs and            
  82.     |    fancy packaging.                                                      
  83.     |                                                                          
  84.     | 3) You get access to a MUCH broader base of available programs.          
  85.     |    Thousands of excellent programs have been written by expert           
  86.     |    programmers who would never consider marketing commercially.          
  87.     |    Through the concept of shareware, these people make their             
  88.     |    programs available to the community.  Usually, all they ask in        
  89.     |    return is a small fee to reward them for the time and effort          
  90.     |    they've put into the program.

  92.     | The system is based entirely on the honour system, and generally         
  93.     | works quite well.  (Most people are honest and wouldn't violate          
  94.     | the trust placed in them by the author of the software.)

  125.     |  DUP is a duplication utility intended for use by small firms for        
  126.     |  the creation of distribution disks for their software.                  
  127.     |                                                                          
  128.     |  It features a simple and informative user interface, and a number of    
  129.     |  unique and valuable features:                                           
  130.     |                                                                          
  131.     |        - audible signal for disk change                                  
  132.     |        - format, write and verify in one pass                            
  133.     |        - format may turned off for pre-formatted disks                   
  134.     |        - verify may be turned off for maximum speed                      
  135.     |        - option to increment serial numbers during production            
  136.     |        - ability to read an entire master disk into an image             
  137.     |          file, eliminating the need to read the master at the            
  138.     |          beginning of each duplicating session

  145.     |  When used with 286 or 386 machines DUP will be able to detect the       
  146.     |  various disk drives available in the system.  If you have a PC or XT    
  147.     |  class machine, you will have to edit the file DUP.DRV to match your     
  148.     |  system configuration.                                                   
  149.     |                                                                          
  150.     |  The file contains four numbers which represent drives A:-D:.  They      
  151.     |  should be set as follows:                                               
  152.     |                                                                          
  153.     |    0 - hard drive or drive not present                                   
  154.     |    1 - 360K 5 1/4" floppy                                                
  155.     |    2 - 1.2M 5 1/4" floppy                                                
  156.     |    3 - 720K 3 1/2" floppy                                                
  157.     |    4 - 1.4M 3 1/2" floppy

  161.     |    if your system has a 360K 5 1/4" floppy as A: and a 720K 3 1/2"

  229.     |    simply highlight the name of the older image, and press return.       
  230.     |    The older image will be updated from the diskette.

  236.     |    Allows the setting of the various system options.

  238.     |    FORMAT... when ON will format each track prior to writing it          
  239.     |              allowing the use of blank diskettes without the             
  240.     |              need to process them prior to software duplication.

  242.     |    VERIFY... when ON verifys the CRC for the track after each            
  243.     |              write.  This is a good check for media flaws but            
  244.     |              takes a little more time.

  246.     |    SERIAL #. when ON will increment a serial number imbedded in          
  247.     |              the main module of the duplicated software.                 
  248.     |              Several parameters must be set before this will             
  249.     |              work properly:                                              
  250.     |                                                                          
  251.     |              Target... this specifies the name of the                    
  252.     |                        production software module which                  
  253.     |                        contains the serial number                        
  254.     |                                                                          
  255.     |              Record #. this specifies the record # (1000 bytes)          
  256.     |                        which contains the serial number                  
  257.     |                                                                          
  258.     |              Position. this specifies the position of the                
  259.     |                        serial number within the 1000 byte                
  260.     |                        record                                            
  261.     |                                                                          
  262.     |              Counter.. this is the last written serial number            
  263.     |                        counter suffix (see Serial Number                 
  264.     |                        Format)

  266.     |    DATA..... this allows the parameters for a given file to be           
  267.     |              recalled for modification

  272.     |    This option changes the serial numbering between automatic            
  273.     |    incrementing (disks are serialized in sequence) and manual

  281.     |  The serial number is a 10 character ASCII string imbedded in one of     
  282.     |  the larger files of the production software system.                     
  283.     |                                                                          
  284.     |  Serial number format is YYMMDDXXXX where YYMMDD is lifted from the      
  285.     |  file's directory entry, XXXX is a 4 character serial number counter     
  286.     |  suffix which may consist of any 4 characters form (A-Z,0-9).            
  287.     |                                                                          
  288.     |  The serial number routines are intended for use by KNOWLEDGEABLE        
  289.     |  PC users.  These routines expect accurate data and no attempt           
  290.     |  is made to verify input validity.  Inserting a serial number            
  291.     |  indiscriminately WILL make duplicated disks unusable.

  298. |    that is, it may be freely distributed for TRIAL use.  This gives you     |
  299. |    the benefit of being able to try it out BEFORE you buy.  If you don't    |
  300. |    find it useful, simply destroy or give away your copy and accept my      |
  301. |    thanks for giving it a shot.                                             |

  303. |    If, however, you find it beneficial and wish to continue using it,       |
