Appendix A: Extended Options for Registered Users
These programs were first made available for public use in March 1985.
Since then the system has been going through an almost continuous
process of revision and extension. The descendant "chart" and rela-
tive report are two significant enhancements that have been made to
the basic set of programs. In addition, a number of other options
have been made part of an "extended" system which is available only to
registered users of the programs (see the introduction to this manual).
As of Oct 1987, the extended options include:
1. A program for creating INDEX files which permit processing the
Family History System files in various orders. An index may be
created based upon one or more of: Surname, GivenName, BirthDate
(YMD or MDY), DeathDate (YMD), Latest Marriage Date (MDY) and ID#.
Further, you may request that a husband's surname be substituted
for a wife's when creating the index.
2. A program for producing printed indexes for ancestor, descendant,
relative and "batched" family group reports, and for sets of
ancestor charts.
3. A program for searching the files based upon up to 9 selection
rules stated in terms of:
ranges of ID#, Birthdate & Deathdate, Sex,
substrings or soundex of Surname, GivenName, BirthPlace and
DeathPlace, and existence of Marriage records, children or
residence information.
The program also produces detailed listings in indexed or ID#
sequence of selected information, including comments, latest resi-
dence information, and common-term relationship (if any). A
Surname Summary report can also be produced which provides a means
for evaluating the completeness of certain types of information
among groups of selected records.
4. An `IMPORT/EXPORT' utility which permits copying information from a
set of family files into an ASCII (standard character) dataset in
a GEDCOM format advocated by the LDS Genealogical Dept and the
quarterly journal `Genealogical Computing'. This allows you to
build new `subset' Family files containing only individuals in a
`relative', 'ancestor' or 'descendant' work file and promises to
allow you to share information with other genealogical record
keeping systems.
This program also has an option for creating a "MailMerge" format
address file which may be used with database programs such as the
publicly distributed PC-FILE III to print mailing labels. The file
may also be used with many word-processors for printing form
letters.
5. A program for verifying/correcting system maintained "pointer"
fields to assist in recovering files which have been damaged as the
result of an extended update session's being prematurely termi-
nated (for example, as the result of a power failure).
