Telego version 3.3 Documentation 04/28/91
OVERVIEW
Telego is a program for IBM compatibles which enables you to play Go or
Go-moku with an opponent at your computer or over the telephone using a
modem. The program allows you to:
save or recall games from disk
explore variations as you play through a game
set clocks for game time and byo yomi
count the scores
incrementally save the game in case of phone problems
display move numbers on the stones.
Telego is compatible with the Tele-tsuke program written by Sam Zimmerman
and distributed by the American Go Association. The saved games are
readable with Goscribe.
REQUIREMENTS
IBM compatible computer
640K memory
EGA or VGA monitor (separate programs for EGA and VGA)
modem (for the remote mode)
mouse (recommended, but not required)
SHAREWARE
This program is released as shareware, which means that you may make as
many copies as you like and distribute them to your friends but you may
not sell them. If you find the program useful or want to support further
development of improved versions, please register your copy by sending a
check for $20 to the name and address below. You will receive the latest
update of the program. I will include a list of registered users. If you

The following is a detailed description of Telego organized by the two main
screens displayed by the program.
STARTUP SCREEN──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
You may pull down the three menus from the menu bar at the top of the
screen by pressing the left mouse button. Selection is accomplished by
releasing the left button while on the desired menu item.
OPTIONS─────────────────────────────
INFORMATION
This is where you are now.
AUTOSAVE
Telego will automatically save the current game to disk each time a
specified number of moves have occured. This feature is an option
only on games played via modem. You may disable the autosave function
by entering zero when prompted for the interval.
QUIT AND RETURN TO DOS
Select this to exit the program.
LOCAL───────────────────────────────
Use this mode to play a game with someone at your computer, look over
a previously played game, or to work through problems.
MODEM───────────────────────────────
Use this mode to play via modem. Your opponent must also be using
Telego or Tele-tsuke. After finishing and saving a game in this mode
you can use the local mode to look over your game or try out variations
in your responses.
After selecting which game you want to play you will see a screen
asking you to specify the protocol which your opponent will be using.
If your opponent is using the Tele-tsuke program or a version of Telego
earlier than 3.1 you must select the Tele-tsuke option. Version 3.1
enables either player to play both sets of stones.
You then turn on your modem and identify which serial port the modem
is using. You will then need to select the baud rate for the communi-
cations. If your opponent is using Tele-tsuke you must select 300
baud. The two faster rates are useful mostly for their speed in pass-
ing saved games between you and your opponent; you probably wouldn't
notice any difference during actual play.
The next screen puts you in an interactive session with your modem. If
you type AT<RETURN> you should see an OK from your modem. You may now
dial your opponent using the ATDT prefix for touchtone or ATDP prefix
for pulse dialing. For example, you may type ATDT 555-1212<RETURN>.
If you are receiving the call from your opponent, type ATA<RETURN> when
you hear the phone ring. Consult your modem manual for more sophisti-
cated operations such as setting the modem to auto-answer. If you have
call waiting and three-way calling, you may disable call waiting on in-
coming calls by keying F10 when the phone rings. In either case, when
the CONNECT message appears on the screen you must key F1 to proceed.
Keying F9 will toggle the echo of typed characters. This is useful if
you need to interact with a communications service such as Telenet.
You will then be prompted for your name, which will be sent to your
opponent when you hit the <RETURN> key.
BOARD SCREEN─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Selections are made by positioning the cursor on the item and clicking
the left mouse button. If you are not using a mouse you select by holding
the <control> key down and keying the first letter of the menu item.
A one-line reminder of what each menu item does will appear if you click
the right button while on the menu. When playing via modem a text display
area appears in the lower left of the screen. Messages typed by you
appear in the upper half and messages received appear in the lower half
of the box.
The table (F7), text (F8), and board (F9) colors may be changed by key-
ing the appropriate function key to identify the object to change, then
using F1-F6 (VGA) or F1-F2 (EGA). The text color won't be adjustable if
you are using the ANSI.SYS driver in your Config.sys file.
F1 & F2 decrease and increase the Red, F3 & F4 change Green and F5 & F6
change Blue for the VGA version. The color values appear at the top of
the screen. Key F10 to return to the default colors.
INITIAL MENU────────────────────────
QUIT
This will return you to the startup screen.
DELAY MOUSE
This controls the length of time between pressing the mouse button and
the resulting action. If you are not familiar with the mouse you may
want to increase the delay (default value is 1). Click the right but-
ton to abort this function.
SOUND
Changes the duration of the sounds made by the program. Selecting zero
will silence all sounds. Click the right button to abort.
RECALL GAME
A file selection screen will appear with all files in the current
directory listed. You may use the mouse or the keyboard to identify
the game you wish to recall. Further instructions are shown on the
screen for changing directories or file specifications. When playing
in local mode the board will clear and instructions for continuing the
game will appear. When playing via modem you will be prompted for
your color. The game will then be sent to your opponent and will
display on the board. If you are using a clock, be sure to select SET
CLOCK before recalling the game. In local mode the name of the game
will be displayed at the top of the board.
BEGIN GAME
This bring up a selection box at the top of the screen for determining
the handicap. Put the cursor over the desired handicap and click the
left button. Selecting this means you must play the black stones.
Click the right button to abort.
CLOCK SETUP
Prompts you to key in the opponent's time (in minutes), your time, the
number of byo-yomi's (0 to 9), and the length of each byo yomi in
seconds (99 seconds maximum). You may put in different times for each
player. If you are playing against Tele-tsuke be aware that the
actual time which Tele-tsuke gives is one minute longer than specified.
Also, both Telego and Tele-tsuke will count down through the zero byo
yomi (so the number is actually one more than specified.)
NAME GAME
This prompts for the game filename. The default name is 'lastgame.gam'
and the file will be in the same directory which Telego resides. You
may specify a path along with the filename if you want the file stored
in another directory.
GAME MENUS──────────────────────────
To the left of the board is a display of the current move number and the
grid coordinates of the cursor when it is on the board. A third line
appears when you are within 25 moves of filling the spaces allocated for
storing the moves of the game. Play a stone by positioning the cursor on
or near the intersection and clicking the left mouse button. In local
mode the right button will take back the last move. If you are not using
a mouse key <insert> to play and <delete> to take back. When playing via
modem your opponent must select TAKE BACK in order remove your last
move. The last move played will be marked with a dot of the opposite
color.
QUIT
This will return you to the startup screen after confirmation via a
CANCEL/PROCEED selection box at the top of the screen. If you do want
to quit put the cursor over the PROCEED and click the left button.
You may also proceed by keying <P> on the keyboard; any other key will
cancel the selection.
RESTART
This will return you to the initial game menu after confirmation via a
CANCEL/PROCEED selection box at the top of the screen. If you do want
to restart put the cursor over the PROCEED and click the left button.
You may also proceed by keying <P> on the keyboard; any other key will
cancel the selection.
SCORE
Counts the score, taking into account the prisoners and territory. If
all dame have not been filled and all prisoners have not been removed,
a message will appear at the top of the screen asking you to do so.
Fill dame by placing the cursor on the empty intersection and playing a
stone. See the next heading for instructions on capturing.
KILL
Identify a stone or group to capture by placing the cursor on the
stone and clicking the left mouse button. Key <insert> to capture if
you are not using a mouse. Leave this mode by clicking the right
button or by clicking the left button when the cursor is not on a stone.
If you accidently capture a stone or group, select the TAKE BACK option
to replace it.
TAKE BACK
This undoes the last move. When using the modem only your opponent
has the option of allowing you to take back a move.
REDRAW
This will clear the board and replay the game up to the present point.
The last move played is marked with a dot of the opposite color.
Mouse users:
Click the left mouse button to play the next move. Click the right
button to back up a move. Click both simultaneously (this may take
a little practice) to continue the redraw at maximum speed, and
click the left button to stop the redraw.
Others: Key <END> to play the next move. Key <HOME> to back up a
move. Key <Page Up> to redraw at maximum speed, and any other key
to stop the redraw.
If you key <ESCAPE> before the redraw is complete the game is erased
from the screen. You may also click on the VARIATIONS option box to
check out other lines of play (see the text below at VARIATIONS).
ARCHIVE
This will save the game to disk. A prompt will appear at the top of
the screen for you to specify a filename for the game. The default
name is 'lastgame.gam' unless you had already specified a name from
the AUTOSAVE function on the Options menu. You must key a <RETURN>
for the game to be saved. If you want to abort the save, key <ESCAPE>
or click the right mouse button. The file format is compatible with
Goscribe.
PASS
Select this to pass your turn. Two successive passes will end a game
played via modem and will automatically invoke the ARCHIVE function.
Passes in local mode merely change the stone color and increment the
move number.
NUMBERS ON/OFF
When numbers are ON all stones played will have the move number on the
stone. This function is useful for copying a game in from a magazine
in which the game is shown in several figures. Start the game with
numbers ON and copy in the first figure. Then REDRAW the incomplete
game. Turn numbers ON again and copy in the next figure and repeat
these steps until the entire game is copied.
CLOCK ON/OFF
This stops or restarts the local clock. This selection works only if
you had selected SET CLOCK from the initial menu. When playing via
modem a clock status message is sent to your opponent whenever this
selection is invoked. This will work with Tele-tsuke but only Telego
can control the clock so this is only an option during your move. If
your game is interrupted be sure to note the times remaining and re-
member to select SET CLOCK before RECALL GAME when starting up again.
VARIATIONS
Select this to explore variations of the game. When selected the menu
item will change to 'VARY 1 '. The '1' is the current level of
variation. If you play some moves, they will be stored at this level.
Mouse users: Clicking on the up arrow will change to level 2 where a
variation on this variation will be stored. Clicking on the down
arrow will remove all stones played at that variation.
Others: Key <Page Up> to increment the variation, and <Page Down> to
decrement the variation.
You must be completely out of variations (the VARIATIONS message
appears) before you can continue with the game.
