NOTICE --
A limited license is granted to all users of the "Unregistered 100
sector" version of this program, to make copies of this program and
distribute them to other users, on the following conditions:
1. The program is to be distributed only in its original, unmodified
archive format.
2. No fee (or other consideration) is to be charged for copying or
distributing the program without written permission of the author.
3. Registered users do not distribute or in any other manner make known
to unregistered users the "garble" password for the extended archive
or their registration code.
A limited license is granted to registered users of the program, to
use and maintain for their sole possession, any files generated by the Gal-XZ
Wars 4.0 system. These programs may not be distributed to others in any way,
shape, or form. Distribution of registered copies or attempts to utilize
"registered" functions of the program by unregistered users may constitute
copyright infringement, and possible theft charges.
Sysop documentation for Gal-XZ Wars 4.0 (c) Copyright 1988 Barry Kearns
This program was originally designed to be run as a "door" within the
structure of either the GT Power or PCBoard BBS programs, but will operate on
any MS-DOS based machine with sufficient memory.
This program is distributed with the following files:
GALXZW40.EXE -- The executable module of Gal-XZ Wars 4.0
GALXZW40.TXT -- Instructions for the game (please make available to players)
GWSYSOP.DOC -- This file
GALMAP.FIL -- Data File- Galactic Information
GALCON.FIL -- Data File- Sector Connections
PLAYERS.FIL -- Data File- Player Information
LOTTERY.FIL -- Data File- Galactic Lottery
GW40INFO -- Data File- Program Data
REGISTER.TXT -- Registration Form
CONFIG40.EXE -- Program to configure the program for GT, PCBoard, or Other.
PLRSIM.EXE -- Program allowing Sysop to access any player's file
PLRSIM.TXT -- Explanation of PLRSIM.EXE
UPDATE.GW -- Compatibility with previous versions, networking on PCB.
There is a supplemental archive, containing all files necessary to resize and
customize the galaxy to your specifications, this is called:
REGIST40.ARC -- Garbled archive containing support programs for use
by registered users.
If you did not receive all of these files, please attempt to contact the
author (contact points listed below).
The first thing that should be done, before attempting to run the
program, is to create a subdirectory for storage of all Gal-XZ Wars 4.0 files.
Version 4.0 is incompatible with earlier versions, so if you have any 3.x
files in your system, either create a new directory for 4.0, or clear out all
of the old files before transferring in the new ones.
Copy all files from the GALXZW40.ARC archive (and REGIST40.ARC, if you
have already registered this version...) into this subdirectory.
I have recently run this program as a "door" on my registered version
of GT Power 13.00, under the Doorway program for door management. It should
be possible to use almost any I/O redirection program, but Gateway doesn't
seem to work with this program for some odd reason. I highly recommend the
Doorway 1.3 program... I suggest registering it (The best $15 I ever spent on
my computer was registering this program..), but you can run the program under
an unregistered version of Doorway. Redirection is not necessary if you are
not using this program as a "door" or "live program" from within a BBS. This
should run on any display system, as it has been deliberately designed to use
only standard BIOS calls, and does not access any ANSI calls.
Next, determine which configuration you will run the program under. The
current choices are GT, PCBoard, and Other. Run the CONFIG40.EXE program, and
set the program for your choice. If you use RBBS, or other BBS programs, use
the O)thers option and the "Generic" batch file below. The CONFIG40.EXE
program will determine how the computer gets the player's name...
If you have set the O)thers option, you should make clear to users of the
program that the spelling of their name on each logon is VITALLY important.
They will be prompted for their name and a password every time they run the
program. Because of this, it will be possible for one user to run several
"accounts" in the game by logging on under several different names. Close
monitoring of users is highly recommended if you are using the O)thers
configuration.
The following are EXAMPLE batch files for use on GT and PCBoard systems. Be
sure to substitute in appropriate information for your system (i.e. Change
\GW40 to the directory you choose to place the GW files in...). If you are
using Doorway, a copy of Doorway needs to be present in the GW40 directory for
it to properly operate.
"Generic" Batch file for non-GT and non-PCBoard BBS's:
ECHO OFF
CD \GW40
DOORWAY COM1 /T:^C /R:^R /G:OFF /s:* /P:GALXZW40.EXE
CD \EMPTY
GT Power batch file (Unregistered Doorway):
ECHO OFF
CD \GALXZWAR
COPY C:\GT\GTUSER.BBS
DOORWAY COM1 /T:^C /R:^R /G:OFF /s:* /P:GALXZW40.EXE
CD \EMPTY
GT Power batch file (Registered Doorway):
ECHO OFF
CD \GALXZWAR
COPY C:\GT\GTUSER.BBS
DOORWAY COM1 /T:^C /R:^R /G:OFF /O: /M:45 /s:* /P:GALXZW40.EXE
CD \EMPTY
Batch file for PCBoard (Registered Doorway):
ECHO OFF
CD \GW40
COPY C:\PCB\PCBOARD.SYS
DOORWAY COM1 /M:45 /O: /T:^C /R:^R /G:OFF /S:C:\PCB /P:GALXZW40.EXE

Batch file for PCBoard (Unregistered Doorway):

COPY C:\PCB\PCBOARD.SYS
DOORWAY COM1 /T:^C /R:^R /G:OFF /S:C:\PCB /P:GALXZW40.EXE
CD \PCB
BOARD
If you are running this program locally, and not under a BBS structure, simply
run the CONFIG40.EXE program and select O)thers... then simply type GALXZW40
from your DOS prompt...
Always ensure that you have the time and date properly set before running this
program...
This program is currently configured for "Unregistered Use". This gives a
galaxy of 100 sectors, and a maximum of 24 players. You may freely use this
program on your system, but may not sell copies, or charge specifically for
its use. All functions of the program are accessible from the unregistered
version, with the exception of the "Rebellion" option. Registration of the
program will give you access to a powerful map and player editing program, and
will allow you to resize the galaxy to almost ANY SIZE YOU WISH. The only
limitations on the size are your computer's memory, and the amount of disk
space you have available. I have configured the program and run it with a
5000 sector galaxy, and a 32000 player roster. Registration will also entitle
you to user support, and notification of further updates to the program. See
the file REGISTER.TXT for the registration form. Current registration price
ranges from $20 to $40 (See REGISTER.TXT for more info...)
It is suggested that you place the file GALXZW40.TXT in a place where
your users can easily access it, as this will explain many of the game aspects
to them.
The program will automatically run maintenance on itself the first time
it is played each day. Because of this, you need to ensure that your system
has some method of maintaining the correct time AND date. I am using a
battery-powered clock chip on my system, but it is possible to simulate this
function using dos calls and storage files. I won't detail the process here,
but if a user wishes, I will write a series or programs that will closely
simulate the effect. Please write to me if you would be interested in
purchasing such a collection of programs.
The structure of this game is such that it is designed to be run on a
hard drive, but it may be possible to run it off of floppy drives (provided,
of course, that you have room for all applicable files and still have room to
run the BBS itself. I'm sure the highest chances of success lie with those
Sysops that have 3.5" drives installed in their system. This program is
currently running under MS-DOS 3.2, and I cannot certify that it will run on
earlier DOS versions. This program is slightly memory-hungry, so if you'd
like to run large galaxies, ensure that you have as much memory on-board as
possible. (I've successfully run a 5000 sector, 32000 player game on my BBS
with 640k of installed memory.)
Please do not send cash, send a cashier's check or money order. If you
send a personal check, please allow 3 additional weeks so that I can ensure
the check will clear.
