DARKSIDE is a British game, sequel to the very popular DRILLER.
This is a working demo which consists of approximately 1/8 of the
full game. All controls are operative and the standard environment of
the full game is used, which means that it looks and feels like the real thing.
However, you will not be able to complete the mission as certain of
the missing areas are essential to the completion of the mission objective.
A brief summary of the scenario:
The Ketars, exiled criminals, have built a huge weapon known as Zephyr One with
which they intend to destroy your home world. The weapon is powered by a
network of Energy Collection Devices, ECD's, that straddle the moon circling
your world. These tall square towers are crowned by Solar cells which convert
the Sun's rays into energy. Once the critical level is reached Zephyr One will
fire and your planet will be obliterated.
In the full game your mission is to incapacitate every ECD on the moon and so
starve Zephyr One of power. To disable the ECD's you must destroy the Solar
Cells - but if the ECD is connected to two or more others which are active it
will immediately regenerate. Danger awaits you in the form of of 'tank-like
Plexors, which will attack as soon as you come within range. And don't forget
to look overhead - flying gunships may suddenly appear and attack.
Your survival suit comes complete with Quad lasers, a Plasma Shield and a
Jetpack for extra mobility, plus a meagre fuel supply. You can find additional
supplies of fuel - usually within buildings - along with power for your shield.
But don't forget that you are operating under a time limit.
The display shows you barren moon as seen through your helmet. The LED's on the
right indicate the rate at which the ECD's are feeding power to Zephyr One. Once
the top light is lit the great weapon will fire. There is also a compass that
tells you what direction you are travelling in.
On your travels you will find PowerPorters - strange suspended platforms that
can teleport you around the moon. Also look out for the Telepods - however,
before they abandoned the moon the Ketars hid the crystals which power the
Telepods, so you must find these before the pods will operate.
