What is BOUNCER?
BOUNCER is a relatively simple, but challenging of game similar to the old
PONG games. There are a few twists that make it more interesting and not so
easy to master. You must keep the bouncing ball from destroying the city by
placing your paddle between it and the city. This will deflect the ball back
up into the sky. If you are successful in doing that, you will receive 50
points each time you do it. If you do not succeed, you will lose 100 points
for each explosion that occurs. The bouncing ball can explode MANY times per
each drop, not just once, so it is imperitive that you stop it at all costs.
Each round will last approximately 60 seconds, and then you will be given the
choice of continuing that game, starting another game, or exiting to DOS.
Files included in this package
Below is a list of the files that are included in this distribution package.
If any are missing, you do not have an official package.

Keys available during play
The mouse on your computer is where most of the playing action will occur.
The S key will toggle the sound on and off. The only other key in use is
the Q key, and that will allow you to quit the game at any time if you want too.
Play notes
There are a few interesting features to the play of the game. If you are
real skillful (or lucky) you can sometimes get the ball to enter into the
end of the paddle for a few seconds. It will bounce around in there, and
build your score to a rather nice level. The fewer times you allow the ball
to hit the city the better, as the ball can deduct many points from your
score during each drop to the city. Be careful when moving the paddle to
a new location, as the ball will also bounce off the bottom too, and return
to the city to wreak havoc again. Also, as you progress from level to level
you will find that there will be more and more islands. These islands will
deflect the ball in various ways depending on how they are struck. The
islands will always number 5 times the level of play you currently are at.
The islands will also degrade as they are struck by the ball, and can
sometimes allow the ball to pass through if degraded enough. They are all
restored to random locations with each level change or restart.
Gravity
When you first start the program up, one of the questions asked will be if
you wish an easy or hard game. If you choose easy, then there is no gravity
in effect in the playing area. What this means is that the ball will bounce
around at a constant velocity at all times. This is not to say that it will
always follow a predictable trajectory though. Islands will deflect the ball
in various ways depending on where they are hit. If you select hard, then
you will have all the other features to contend with as well as the effects
of gravity. The amount of gravity will be shown just above the playing field
of the screen. It will start out at .00005, and as levels increase later in
the game, it will increase to a maximum of .0005. Doesn't sound like much
right? Wrong. This will really make things hectic in the latter stages of
play as the ball will tend to drop much more rapidly and it will curve on
the way down. It will also bounce more easily if it hits the city. Hitting
the ball with the paddle will "recharge" it enough to get it back up into
the island area so you can score more points hitting them.
Scoring
Scoring is done by hitting the ball with the paddle. You will receive 50
points per hit. Directing the ball into one of the islands will gain you
10 points per explosion (even if the ball hits by accident). If you miss
the ball, and it hits the city at the bottom, you will lose 100 points per
explosion. Sometimes the ball will even bounce THRU parts of the city and
explode a number of times, so try to avoid missing the ball if possible.
You also now have a moving island available to try to hit. If you do hit
it, you will add 150 points to your score. Try to hit it often if you can.
At the end of the game, and if you have beaten the best score as shown at
the bottom left of the screen, your name and score as well as the level
you obtained will be saved and loaded the next time the game is played.
Technical note
This program will require a VGA level system to operate properly as it is
set to use a SCREEN 12 command. Other versions of the program may be released
to operate on CGA, Mono, and EGA systems in the future. This program will not
work without a mouse attached to your computer.
