APPENDIX A. GLOSSARY OF TERMS Quiz Master 5.0
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A.1 ASCII Text File
An Ascii Text File is a file that contains only the American
Standard Code for Information Interchange set of printable codes
from decimal 32 to 126 (space character to -). The codes below 32
are non printable codes and are used by word processors to
control the position of the characters on the screen and control
the printer. Files produced via a Document Mode contain all the
ASCII characters, and files produced via a Text mode contain only
printable characters. To see if a file was produced via the
Document Mode or Text Mode, use the DOS command TYPE to type out
a file the screen. If you hear a lot of beeps and strange
characters appear on the screen, you are viewing a Document file.
If the screen is clear and readable, you are viewing a Text file.
The questions banks used by Quiz Master are in an Ascii text
file format. That means you can easily create a question bank
with any word processor capable of producing an Ascii text file.
Virtually all word processors on the market today can be used.
A.2 Book Numbering
For want of a better term, book number means the actual
question number in the question bank. The term originated from
the FAA exam books and was the reference number from the book. If
you select Book Numbering On the exam will include the actual
question number from the question bank printed beside the exam
question number.
Book Numbering Off
1. What is the gravitational force exerted by the sun?
Book Numbering On
1. 3. What is the gravitational force exerted by the sun?
^
This is question number 3 from the question bank, but it is
question number 1 on the exam.
A.3 Question Bank List of 10
The "Question Bank List of 10" is the list of up to 10
Question Banks you wish to combine on a exam. First you must add
Question Banks to the list of 10 before you can choose a Question
Bank to select questions from.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
A.4 Question Bank
A Question Bank is a collection of questions in an Ascii
Text File which you prepare with your own word processor.
Therefore anyone who can use a word processor can prepare
question banks for Quiz Master. See chapter 11, "Question Bank
Construction" for complete details.
A.5 Re-Indexing
To make the program very fast in retrieving questions from a
question bank, we are using an index file to point to where the
question is in the question bank. Each .DAT question bank must be
accompanied by a .IDX file. The index file is created
automatically when the Check Program is run.
A.6 Scramble
Scramble means that multiple-choice answers are printed in a
random order. You can set Scramble Mode ON when printing to have
1 or more exams that contain the same questions but the Multiple-
Choice answer order will be different. (Scramble and Shuffle can
be combined).
A.7 Shuffle
Shuffle means that the questions will be printed in a random
order. You can set Shuffle Mode ON while printing to have 2 or
more exams that contain the same questions but are in a different
order. (Shuffle and scramble can be combined).
