SMS NET: REACH BBS SYSTEMS RAPIDLY!
████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████
You do NOT have to be a paid subscriber or paid registrant of
SMS to belong to SMS Net. Join SMS Net by filling out the
APPLICATION FORM at the end of this article. We rely on each
other to upload a fellow member's shareware to selected BBS
systems throughout America in exchange for similar courtesy from
fellow authors! See the outline and application form which follows
the membership listing. BBS listings are continously revised.

An example to show how SMS Net works: when a shareware package
is released by an author in Seattle, for example, that author
mails disk copies to 20 or 30 willing shareware authors in large
cities such as New York, Houston, Sacramento, etc. Those authors
rapidly upload it to 4 or 5 HOT BBS systems in their city. In
exchange, each author does the same for every other author in
SMS Net. The system is simple, reciprocal, inexpensive and
verifiable (you can always call a BBS long distance to see if
the job was accomplished.)
SMS Net members should notify SMS in case of changes or deletions.
Members of SMS Net are informed of new additions or other changes
to this list by routine mailings. Submit your application at the
end of this file to join SMS Net. You MUST be on this list which
all members receive to exchange software in the manner described.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SMS NET MEMBERS
████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████
The following suggestions may be useful . . .
Please print on the disk jacket or separate letter that yours
is an SMS Net submission! We all see a lot of disks and need to
know about those for SMS Net! First thing most SMS Net members
do is check to make sure that the author REALLY is an SMS Net
member by checking the main SMS Net list.
Try to limit your submissions to fellow members to about one
disk of 360K (zipped) per month or a total of 12 x 360K = 4,320K
per year. Thus maybe you want to have six disks uploaded by a
fellow member in January then another six in June. Or maybe one a
month. Any more than that and maybe private arrangments should be
worked out. Asking someone to upload 20 or 30 Megs of shareware
during a year is a little overkill.
If possible, ship your files to SMS Net members PREPACKED in
standard ZIP file format, ready to upload! Keep ZIP file sizes
below 360K since anything larger is irritating to a SYSOP receiving
the uploaded file. Break program into several parts if necessary
to preserve the 360K file size limit.
Many shareware authors ship files in ZIP format when using BBS
systems. If your program uses an INTERNAL archive and either
self-extracts or needs an unpacking utility some authors use
LHARC which does not require formal licensing since it is offered
as "freeware" by the the LHARC author. Be very careful, for example,
that you do not include PKWARE (PKZIP) code within your program
unless you have paid a licensing fee to PKWARE for commercial use
of their software. The ZIP file format is in the public domain.
The code to either create or unpack the ZIP is NOT!
Generally ship your programs ONLY on 360K format 5 1/4 inch
floppies. Not every author can read 1.2M or 720K formats!
Include a clear description on paper or disk. NOTE CAREFULLY
HOW THE PROGRAM VERSION AND MULTIPLE PART REFERENCE IS EXPLAINED
DIRECTLY IN THE NAME OF THE ZIP ARCHIVE: LMR36A.ZIP refers
to version 3.6, part A). The following example on paper or disk
should accompany your SMS Net disk submission so we can all work
together! Example:
LMR36A.ZIP
Lawnmower repair guide - part one
2 line .... Learn how to repair your lawnmower. Animated.
Mouseable. Req. EGA or higher. Ver 3.6 1/2.
1 line .... Lawnmower repair guide Ver 3.6 1/2
LMR36B.ZIP
Lawnmower repair guide - part two
2 line .... Learn how to repair your lawnmower. Animated.
Mouseable. Req. EGA or higher. Ver 3.6 2/2.
1 line .... Lawnmower repair guide Ver 3.6 2/2

APPLICATION FORM

Suggested guidelines: you should live in or very near a large
city and have routine access to the HOT BOARDS in your city. You
must be a shareware author. One author per city. No cash flow
or charges. Upload is verifiable since the sending author can
call the BBS system in a few weeks to see if you have actually
submitted the file to your local BBS! The original author
should submit a SUGGESTED zip file name (e.g., MYFILE33.ZIP) and
submit the file in a completed ZIP format on the disk so that
the uploads are named the same throughout the US. Author should
also submit brief descriptions.
Suggest no more than 20 or 30 authors as total membership;
suggest that members consider submitting no more than 12 - 360K
ZIP files per year for upload so SMS Net members are not
overwhelmed. Probably 4 or 5 BBS systems is reasonable per
author providing the upload courtesy service. A little flexibility
and common sense is the key here. We're all human.
Use a blank sheet of paper or send the following application to
THE $HAREWARE MARKETING $YSTEM

Your name and mailing address: (print or type clearly, thanks!)

NAME TEL MAILING ADDRESS IF KNOWN:
What shareware packages do you currently author or propose to
author? Name of program, version, approximate zipped file size,
description, sample of disk if available so that we can verify
you are an author.
Ok to list this info in future editions of $hareware Marketing
$ystem? Y / N You can still be in the network whether you are
listed or not. A listing in SMS gives you and your package
positive exposure, but some folks like privacy and that's ok too!
